Bioshock Series (apart from Bioshock 2)
Far Cry 3 (and its expansion Blood Dragon)
Half Life Series
Portal Series
Left 4 Dead 2
Metro 2033 + Metro Last Light
Outlast
Tomb Raider (modern reboot)
South Park Stick of Truth
Walking Dead (The TellTale game not the crappy one based on the TV Series)
Civilisation V (with all the DLC)

I endorse all of these games.

Crysis
Crysis 2
Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon

I think Crysis is underated by some but its a very fun game overall, there are a lot of hidden tweaking options for graphics settings. Crysis 2 is linear but its still a very good FPS IMO. Blood Dragon is DLC for FC3, its great. I have not played Crysis 3, its very short apparently.

The most likely FPS games that I return to after a while are Crysis and Half Life 2. But I endorse the others mentioned by Roadbloc. Bioshocks are awesome, personally, I find the gamplay of Bioshock 2 the best. Bioshock 1 story is the best. Bioshock Infinitie is a good game too, but I expected more.

Skyrim has a huge modding community so maybe look for ways to spice it up. I am giving it a rest for now but I plan on returning by adding mods such as the HD texture pack etc I don't think I will ever uninstall this game.

In theory, your 280 should handle all of these games. The only game I have that I can't completely max out is Crysis 2. I have a overclocked 5870 2GB...but it gets rather loud playing some of these.

Lately:
World of Tanks (free*)- Wonderful tank combat in 15 minute battles.
Space Engineers- Still getting familiar with this working on a big ship. Once it's built, what will I do with it? Probably fly circles around my space station.
Left 4 Dead- If you like shooters, I'm shocked you have not played this. Left 4 Dead 2 has been on sale at Steam. It's excellent, and really fun coop.

*free with limits. Most serious players probably opt for subscription because at the upper levels it becomes more challenging to accrue enough money to progress up the tiers in a timely fashion without one.

This reminds me. Older excellent game that might interest the OP: Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. Available on Steam for PC. It's a bit expensive at $19.99 for a 10 year old game.

That's a game you'd have to download user-generated patches for to get it playable, though. Depending on your level of patience in seeking them out and whatnot, it may not be an avenue the OP is willing to pursue. It's not my type of game, personally, but I can see its appeal, and where it could be worth the extra legwork.

Bioshock 2 isn't that bad, but it's definitely overshadowed by the first one and Infinite.

I can also suggest Borderlands 1 and 2.

Actually there is just one patch I think. Download the game. Download the patch and run it. You should be good to go.

Steam Product- Kind of surprising in the description, there is no mention of the need for a patch.

Planet Vampire

Vampire Masquerade: Bloodlines Patch

PC Gamer article

Jeanette Voerman- Vampire Extraordinaire

Smiling Jack

Trivia: If you play Gears of War, the voice actor John DiMaggio who voices Marcus Fenix also plays Smiling Jack, the vamp who gives you the tutorial at the beginning of the game.
