Unhappy iPhone 2.2.1 upgrade - iTunes crashes on next sync

Curious if there's any ideas here.

Check http://discussions.apple.com/thread....5983&tstart=30

iPhone 3G
iPhone
Apple TV
iTunes 8.0.2

Updated iPhone 3G to 2.2.1 and everything appeared to go well. On the next sync, iTunes crashes. On any future sync, the iPhone attempts to sync automatically on connect even though I'm configured to manually sync (probably due to a past failed sync?). On any sync attempt, iTunes crashes (appears to be when something is supposed to be copied to the iPhone - app update, new photo, new podcast, etc... but can't verify).

Connected old iPhone with 2.2 firmware and it also fails now on sync in a similar way.

AppleTV sync appears to work fine.

Others in the Apple thread have reset their phone and reinstalled iTunes (though I don't know if they deleted the library/sync data) and now have a phone with only the default apps, no songs, no videos.

Anyone else? Any ideas?

i went through both the iTunes and iPhoneUpdater logs (and didn't find anything I could decipher...not saying much though). iPhoneUpdater looks like a successful update. Here's the iTunes crash. All crashes appear to have this same data (only variation is in the register data...I think this is typical):

I am having the same exact problem as well. iTunes crashes when connecting either iPhone or iPod. Reset both devices and reinstalled iTunes and it still crashes. All started right after the 2.2.1 update on iPhone. This is crazy.

I am having the same problem. It wasn't immediately after updating to 2.2.1 though. I had been able to sync for a couple days. I synced yesterday after coming home from work. I then tried to sync again later that night and iTunes crashed. It is crashing this morning as well.

I restored my iPhone to the backup this morning and iTunes still crashes.

Same here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 3g and Original iPhone, both having problem. Only the Original was upgraded. This does not happen on Nano, or 160gb Classic ipods. Only my iphones are affected. Started with the original even before the upgrade.

It would begin when syncing apps. Load 1 app, crash, restart, repeat. I had five new apps, so five restarts. Music, backup seemed to work normally. Now, 3g crashes as soon as any data is moved to the phone.

Also, any attempt to cancel sync causes an immediate crash. 2 apple tv's work, sync fine.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Still on 2.2 here. I guess I'll wait for the next update because this one sounds pretty bad. There seems to be lots of problems with 2.2.1 software. :\

Having same problem here with original iPhone.

The first few syncs after upgrading to 2.2.1 went fine, but I didn't upload any new data (eg, new songs or apps) to my iPhone with those first few syncs. Today, though, I bought some new songs and right after the status bar in iTunes appears to indicate they have been synced to my iPhone, iTunes crashes and the songs are not actually on the phone. I've tried removing the new songs from the cue to sync over to the phone, but iTunes keeps crashing at the end sync sessions. Seems to be a problem with iTunes (or the iPhone) terminating the sync and cleaning up the loose ends.

This is annoying...

This seems to be a DRM issue:

"I think we are on the right track with the DRM. Perhaps there was another update on the server end that coincided with the release of 2.2.1. In any event, when I deauthorize my computer, the problem goes away. When I reauthorize it, the problem comes back. Simple as that. "

"Yes, de-authorization of the syncing computer is the way to go if you need a functional work-around.

This obviously bars DRMed content, which causes the problem in the first place. I switched syncing of the iPhone to my laptop after de-authorizing that machine. Stuff works now."

THE GOOD NEWS:

"I know of at least 2 that have talked directly with Apple engineering so it is escalated and is being worked on. Now how soon there's a fix I have no idea..."

Spent a long time trying to solve this with Apple on the phone yesterday. YOUR SOLUTION WORKS ! I HAVE A WORKING KIT AGAIN.

OK - no DRM - but at least syncing.

THANK YOU !

Same issue here with 2.2.1 and iTunes crashing. I did a restore and then made sure nothing was automatically syncing over. I then created a couple of playlists excluding anything protected. Seemed to work for the first sync, but then something that had DRM on it tried to transfer over causing iTunes to crash again. I'll just wait for the iTunes/iPhone update. They need to get this fixed asap.

I Am Having The Same Problem!

The first sign was when I tried to buy something at the apple store in iTunes. , I got a message saying that the balance could not be checked in my account (?). I downloaded two songs using the iTunes App in my iPhone.

Last night, when I tried to sync, iTunes started to crash.

I restored my phone, but the problem continues.

I never had anything like this before.

I hear ya. This is the first serious issue that I've had with an Apple product. Well this, and some silly glitches with Nike+. :-)

A lot of people are having this problem (including me). There are some work arounds but they are a hassle.

Apple needs to work on this because for every one person reporting the problem here, there are probably hundreds of others pulling their hair out and calling Apple looking for answers.

Same Problem Here

I had the same problem. I reinstalled my iPhone as well as reinstalled my iTunes software and had no luck. The only thing that worked for me was to deauthorized my computer and then sync it. Not a great workaround but at least I have access to most of my music and iPhone features.

I have long been an Apple fan but this is starting to try my patience!

Ugh. I replaced the kexts from 10.5.6 last night so I could jailbreak my iPhone. I ended up not doing it in the end but then encountered this problem when reinstalling apps after a restore.

I thought it was obvious that the kexts needed restoring so I used the combo updater for 10.5.6. Didn't help.

I reinstalled iTunes. Didn't help.

I completely reinstalled Leopard. Didn't help.

I came here and saw this thread after doing all if that. Cried.

This is B***S***. It took me like 2 hours to make the latest upgrade. It crashed like a hundred times and when I finally got to restore it my music were gone but the images left, why? The upgrades have NEVER worked without numerous crashes and resetting my iphone.

Worked for me a few hours ago. I'm not going to resync until I have to so I don't know if it was a fluke or not.

My iPhone 3G has also stopped syncing. Every time I plug it into iTunes, iTunes crashes in short order (even with "Automatically Sync" disabled). I tried some of the workarounds that I read about de-authorizing my account, but that didn't seem to do anything.

This is lame.

At least we're not alone: http://discussions.apple.com/thread....85983&tstart=0

I downloaded the free music song of the week just to see what would happen. After that it synced fine. Maybe it somehow reset the DRM file???

As I posted in another thread, apprently the following procedure has fixed the problem for a lot of people. I just tried it this morning and now my iPhone syncs everything including DRM content:

(1) Deauthorized the computer.
(2) Authorize the computer
(3) Go to iTunes Store in iTunes, purchased a FREE app
(4) Sync iPhone
