I have an AirPort card from 1999. Which base system should I use with it and where's the best place to get it?

Any 802.11b access point/router should work for you. The Linksys BEFW11S4 is roughly $50.

airport extreme will run with it but at the lower speeds. or get a used airport

So I noticed that that model does not say it works for Mac. It lists all of the Windows platforms, though....Will I need a CD or software to use it? ...or is it plug and play on the mac?

Plug and play. TCP/IP is TCP/IP. 😀

I have the Netgear WGR614, which is an 802.11g router (54 Mbps). You may not need the extra speed.

I use Linksys's router and here's the low down,

It cannot be upgraded (have the flash bios replaced) with a Mac easily, but it certaily works fine, the configuration utility runs via a web browser, even Safari.

I like linksys a little more than netgear since I think they have an easier to understand setup utility (via ur browser).

You do not need an AirPort Base Station, even used ones are PRICEY.

A good solid 802.11b Access station/base station will be fine. Linksys, D-Link, etc are all good makes. Belking, i haven't had such good reception with, although their other products are usually good.

Despite this, it may be worth getting a 802.11g base station so it will be future proof for a few more years and not that much more expensive anymore.

I have an Airport Extreme base station with a G5 wired, and iMac USB WiFi b and an iBook with the 1999 airport card. Everything is running cool 😎
