This is the number one thing I hate the most about my iPhone. Yes I understand it is not supposed to be a top notch camera but come on. I have a stand alone 2 Mega Pixel camera that takes better pictures than my iPhone. I can live without a flash but you'd think the iPhone would at least have a digital zoom. It's only a software fix, for crying out loud Apple!

Digital zoom, cut and paste, MMS and landscape keypad, then I would be 100% pleased with the iPhone for now. Granted I still would like a swivel camera for video phone use but I can wait for the next gen iPhone for this.

Rant off.

I actually love my iPhone

Is it the best camera ever? Of course not. I wish it had more options. But it is FAR, FAR better than any other camera phone I had had previously and most pictures come out very well

they do. my old phone only took really low res photos even though it had zoom. there are definitly pluses and minues to all products, iphone no exception

Dude, same thing as the MHz myth, there is a Megapixel myth. Just because your iPhone has 2MP, does not mean that it will be anywhere near touching what even a 1MP CAMERA can do. It is all about the lenses, the size of the digital sensor, if there is dedicated image processing...

ANY camera phone will be beat out by an equivalent MP camera. The problem with putting so many things into one device is that each individual one is not as good as it could be if it were alone.

So... I say, live with it! All camera phones kinda suck. They are there to capture a spontaneous moment, not a beautiful nature shot or whatever.

Most modern phones* allow you "digital zoom", you just have to be shooting at VGA resolution so the sensor has enough pixels to play with. Ultimately, it is better though to just take the zoomed out, high MP shot, and crop and zoom afterwards...

*I think just about ALL modern camera phones do. But the iPhone can get away with it, lol, thanks to the :apple: on back :D

There are threads on here that exhibit the capabilities of the iPhone camera. I almost exclusively used mine for a trip to Australia and was very pleased.

Ultimately, the sensor and the lense make the photo while the megapixel simply dictates what size it can be printed.

I would hope so! That's its main function, yeah?

P.S. Digital zoom sucks big, fat, juicy, pink elephant c**k!

Lol thank you for the hilarious comment on digital zoom :D

I don't think so! A camera phone apparently is not as good as a stand alone camera, my 2MB Canon S10 is proof of that.

Ummm... that is exactly what I am saying. One of us is not understanding the other. My point: camera phones suck
big, fat, juicy, pink elephant c**k!
compared to equivalent stand-alones. (there are certain ones that break that truth, but they are generally messed up or cheap as heck...)

Take a look at any iPhone. Then take a look at the smallest point-and-shoot digital camera you can find. That whole P&S camera is made to take pictures. The iPhone does a bazillion other things.

Yes, the camera could be better. But it's hardly worth the whining people give it around here. If it doesn't get any loving on the next hardware update, then start complaining.

Really? Would you actually use it or would you simply just like it because you see it as high tech? Where I live 3G is ubiquitous and not one person I know has EVER used the front camera on their phone for anything other than checking their faces.

C905 FTW

its the only reason why I don't want to buy an iphone (besides the contract deal), the camera is sooo bad. 4 years ago, when I had k750i, it took hugly better pictures than the iphone. I believe the my C905 takes equally good pics as a standard compact, so my set up is C905 and ipod touch, where most iphone users would probably be iphone and compact cam, that is if they find it necassary to take good pics. I'm quite a keen photographer, so thats just my two cents

Digital Zoom

How hard is it to take a picture, zoom and take a screenshot of what you're interested in? That way you have a cropped zoomed in image. Same result.

I don't see why people always complain about the iPhone camera. They would have known how bad it was before they bought the phone, and if a good camera was that important to them, why did they buy the phone? Seriously, if you want a decent camera go buy a £120 one from Currys or something :p

all I can say to the OP is DUHH I dont buy phones for cameras though, I rarely use it. I have my AE-1 Film SLR if I want to take good pictures, and my nikon PnS for rounda about shooting. Will be getting a DSLR soon, but dont expect more than 2 megapixels out of my iPhone. :D:);):p:cool::apple::apple::apple::apple::rolleyes::cool::rolleyes::);):D:apple::apple::apple::apple::rolleyes:

Thank you!

Loads of my friends with "5MP" and "CaptureQuickSuperGoodTrademarkCrazy™" camera phones are baffled when they see my Facebook photos: theirs looks like they took them in the dead of night with washed out colours and grainy artifacts and mine look like they came from a standard digital camera (during the day) and ask me things like "I thought you took those photos with your iPhone?" :p

Basically; I'm not complaining. Day photos look great and better than most camera phones, night photos... not so much :D

Not sure if you can really tell how bad it is without trying it, is it possible to try the iPhone to take various pictures and upload to a computer to see the quality before buying ?, I dont have an Apple store anywhere near me so not sure

But anyway, I am getting a separate camera next week as the iPhone one is the worst I have used in a phone.

It is terrible.

Other camera phones I've owned (Sony Ericsson's) have been fantastic. Good focus, good lens (Carl Zeiss).

The iPhone is just rubbish to the point that there is no point in even having a camera. Photos often come out blurry because there is no image stabilisation and just awful quality.

I love the camera.. whenever i take pictures my friends are like "Whoa, thats such a good picture for a phone!"

Way better than my last phone.

It's doesn't suck!

I too used to complain about the iPhone's camera all the time. But then my boyfriend starting taking pictures with his 3G, and uploaded them to his Flickr page -- and some of the have become his most popular pics:

Also, take a look at some other amazing photographers I've found who have decided to use the iPhone as their main camera:

Basically, it's not about the camera you use, but HOW you use it. Also, many of the various camera apps found in the App Store can deliver pretty amazing results. Sometimes it just takes a bit of creativity, patience, and a steady hand (which my boyfriend had, but I do not) to get some pretty cool pics.

Also, check out the iPhoneography blog, which has a lot reviews on camera apps, tips & tricks, and interviews with iPhone photographers:
