Tim Cook: 'Ideas' for a Netbook, iPhone Price Changes, iMacs?

Macworld.co.uk relays (via MacBlogz) a report by Sanford C. Bernstein & Co analyst Toni Sacconaghi who recently met with Apple's acting CEO Tim Cook.

According to Sacconaghi, Cook hinted at "ideas" for an Apple netbook as well as iPhone price changes:
Quote:
"Tim Cook stated that since Steve Jobs announced his leave of absence, he was spending more time on new products, how Apple could take the iPhone into new markets and examining iPhone's business model"
The analyst goes on to say that there were "several interesting tidbits" pointing to new iPhones and possible different price points in the near future. He also expects new iMacs as early as next month, but does not attribute any specific comments about this update to Apple's CEO.

I have some friends that have been waiting for a Mac mini update for almost a year now.

Even though it was the second comment of a thread that is sure to grow to several pages, I might have to agree with your bold prediction... haha

Wouldn't that be down to the carrier though? Apple doesn't set the prices of the data plans.

I'd like to see a price drop. But more than that I'd like Apple to sell the iPhones themselves. I hate how we have to be tied down to carriers just so we can purchase the iPhone, and there is no way I'm paying $600 to some lunatic on craigslist who thinks he can fool me.

I'm waiting on the iMacs aswell.

Even the base model of MacBook

is way too overpowered for most people I know. For a lot of people, web browsing and e-mail is all they need and the computer that meets that low standard was available about 10 years ago! I'm unusual among the people I know because I'd like to do CAD and video editing, so I still would not be completely satisfied with a netbook. A non-trivial number of gamers have moved from the PC (including Macs in this context) to the Wii and other gaming platforms.

Computers became ubiquitous when they were de-emphasized as computing machines and promoted as communication devices. A netbook is a good communication device even though it is a pathetic computer by today's standard.

I'd like to see Apple do it brilliantly, but I don't expect cheap.

He was once described as "low profile, high impact" and that's fine by me. Hopefully he'll do a little more for consumer choice, whereas Jobs was a bit more limiting.

A Netbook in time for holiday season 2009 (Sept - Nov), would be ideal for me, as I'm looking to replace my G5 with a iMac and Netbook combo (and a Mac OS X Netbook would be awesome). I'd probably be willing to pay up to £500/ $700, if done right. Hopefully, we'll see the much needed Mac mini updates and iMac updates we've been craving in March too.

Yeah, you could spin that quote in several ways. It could be Apple is looking at alternate carriers or maybe an iPhone via WiFi for in-home use etc.

The iPhone price changes are interesting. We can most likely expect a new one with fewer features for the $99 that has been going around. Still hope we get a updated 3G though iPhone HD

I'm not going to pass off average joe to Psystar. They're really looking to jump ship from Vista because they really bought into the FUD about it.

Their choice and I'm not going to stop them but I will tell them the Mac mini is stuck in 2006 with its hardware. Wait what year is this now?

So a netbook is pathetically underpowered, but a MacBook is "way too overpowered"? Either you're a troll, or you have NO IDEA what you are talking about. I'll let those who DO know what they are talking about draw their own conclusions, just as I have.

Steve's not coming back. If Steve is only going to be gone until June or whenever then Tim would not be examining the iPhone's business model.

SHHHHHH !!!!!!

my patience is failing to the point of just buying an MBP
but I don't need the portability as much as the convenience fee
I'd place an order right now if all it said was "coming soon"
don't really need disclosure of any specs
cute little phrase like "It's gonna be fast" is all I need to hear

I'd be very interested to see what Apple can bring to the netbook table (if, indeed, they are working on one).

I've had my eye on the Samsung NC10, but it doesn't appear to be coming to Canada anytime soon. The Asus EEE PC 1000HE boasts a 9.5-hour battery life for under $400. I'm very tempted. I think (hope!) the next generation of netbooks (N280 series) will all start to boast battery times in the 5-8 hour range.

That's all I need in a netbook. Cheap, web-browsing capable and lasts forever on battery.
