PowerMac and Display Rumors

According to Appleinsider, Apple is warning resellers of an upcoming "dry spell":

Quote:
The company went on to warn dealers that all CPU inventory (with the exception of Power Macs) is expected to be "sold-out" by March 27th and a product dry spell would occur for approximately the first three weeks in April.
In a subsequent report, Appleinsider claims the new PowerMac revisions may not ship in quantity until before May.

Also expected are price drops on Apple LCDs next week to help clear the channel.

Interesting that they're actually telling resellers about it. Are they trying to get current models moving in preperation for an upcomming release, or is this really just "innocent" preparation for the educational buying season?

Well if Apple lowers the price on LCDs next week, I'll do my part and help clear the channel.

This seems like *good* news to me. There's no earthly reason that apple would be unable to supply emacs, imacs, etc. (machines that have been out for months and months with old CPUs) unless they were no longer producing them. And the only reason that they wouldn't be producing them is if they were ramping up production of new models. Right?

edit: never mind. just saw the actual article. It will happen because apple will be filling large educational orders.

I hope they cut prices on the monitors like the last big cut they did when the 20" replaced the 22". At that time the 23" price was about cut in half. I would definitely buy a 20" at half the current listed price. Too bad this really won't happen though. It makes me wonder should I buy the current discounted monitor offering or wait for the new ones. Answer - wait because the new ones will be that much better and probably cheaper or about the same price as the discounted current models anyway.

Does that match up with that April 23rd or so date I saw? The first 3 weeks would be after the 21st of April. So I would guess the Tuesday of that week we should see some updates.

At least Mac Rumors is staying optimistic...

I wish we could get some more concrete information from them...

Hint, hint, Arn.

At the very least this may mean new desktops of all varieties within the next month or so. Personally I have a VERY STRONG FEELING that there will be a new form factor iMac within the next month

new monitors

I don't know much about lcds, so can somebody tell me aside from the form factor, and maybe a 30" model, is much likely to change on the monitors? i.e. isn't a 23" lcd a 23" lcd regardless?

Apple needs to get its act together, It can't expect a profit if it allows a dry spell! Jeez Apple at this rate you will announce the new products in April, and release them in May Seems to be following a trend!

New form factors are not really just a revision. They will be announced at a big event, probably by Steve itself..so don't think a new imac form factor before wwdc

pm updates soon (maybe only announcement, availability within 2 weeks or so), cause there is already built-in support for them in 10.3.3, they can't afford to have powermacs basicly have the same hardware as 1 year ago, so speedbumps will be the case, maybe updated video cards. Then major announcement of 3ghz at wwdc (mabye only paper release)

apple engineers will not have been sitting on a chair doing nothing for all this time without any major hardware update or release. You can trust me on that one..

Actually is more like the PT Cruiser Year One disease -- hot chip, lots of demand and limited supply while the factory is cranking production up.

With Motorola Apple was the sole customers for the top end of the chip line while, now Apple is competing with quite a few different customers for the 970FX -- IBM, Marvell, Mai Logic, and MicroSoft.

What do you think it is going to look like?

I wish they would severely update the eMac, too.

Sorry, but this educational thing doesn't make any sense to me. Would Apple get these big educational orders at such a short notice that it would have to cut off supplies to its dealers? Otherwise it would make much more sense to simply produce a bit more in weeks/month before the delivery of the big orders, than to disrupt supplies to its non-edu customers. It costs a little bit to do so, but most Macs aren't selling at a rate, that on would assume production limitations, except maybe the iBooks.

I'll stick with Cassidy's original explanation, under the assumption that the news about the dry spell is correct.
