what can someone do with a ime blocked stolen iphone?

had my iphone stolen a couple of weeks ago, bad times.

had it blocked with the ime number from my operator straight away, which they said blocked it completely from use.

but just wondering, can they just jailbreak it and carry on using it?

They can jailbreak it and use it as an ipod touch. 😀
 
It is kind of a good thing you can't change the imei number on the 3G iphone. 2G running 1.1.4 you can hack it.

I believe the IMEI block is just on the UK network, so if they send the phone abroad then it won't be blocked.

I wouldn't stake my life on it but I believe that's the case.

yeah, from what i've read the imei number is alerted as being stolen, so then when to connects to the operator its flagged and stolen and it can't be used. unless operators are international i would imagine it would work abroad

Is there such a thing as an "iPhone with a blocked IMEI? 😕

If your iPhone is stolen, you can have AT&T block the IMEI so that charges are not incurred to your account by the theif.

And then the IMEI doesn't work on that network ever again, unless you manage to get it back.

Depends where they send it. Most (if not all) UK carriers share their blacklists with other EU carriers. From what I've heard, T-Mobile USA also uses the EU blacklist(s), although AT&T does not.

There are doubtless some GSM carriers which do not utilize a shared blacklist, but most of the big ones likely do.

Strange, when mine was stolen AT&T told me they couldn't block the IMEI. That was a year ago, have things changed?

My understanding is that here in the USA, the carriers don't at all bother with blocking IMEI's....

Too much work, and if it is blocked, then usually the theives end up sending it to a different country where the carriers there don't bother with blocking.
