Yeah, restoring the phone or re-installing all your apps won't do anything.
The issue seems to be with the flaky "push" system they're using to update that badge number and all that.

Apple iTunes support is blaming the developers for this issue. Here is the follow-up email I got from them after sending them the link to this thread:
Margaret, here from the iTunes Store. Thank you so much for the link you sent me. It's good to see that you looked this up and are concerned about the updates as well as we. However, I noticed that most people are assuming Apple to have a bug on our end, this is not the case as, the iTunes Store Customer Support team does not evaluate andreview these applications, so I can't give you specific information, but I can tell you that the developer has the best resource for information about their Applications. On a lighter note, there have been more and more customer's reporting this problem with their Apps and Apple is looking into fixing the problem with the developers, however, for now, and as instructed before we are recommending this fix of deleting all Apps and re-downloading, this will in a sense, update the updates. (I know that's funny to say, but it's true) Doing this, will prevent the updates from popping up continuously. App Store purchases may be downloaded again at no charge, either from your device or using iTunes on your computer. Be sure that you are signed in to the same iTunes Store account that you used to shop from the App Store, and follow the steps to purchase any missing content again. You will be notified that you have already purchased the App and can download each missing item again for free. For more information, please visit: App Store FAQ http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/M...cationsFAQPage If you have difficulty downloading any applications, please reply to let me know or consult this article: Troubleshooting applications purchased from the App Storehttp://support.apple.com/kb/TS1702 Once again, thank you for allowing me the opportunity to help you with this issue today. I hope this information has been helpful. If you need any further assistance with this issue, please do not hesitate to contact me by replying to this email. I would be more then happy to assist you further. Have a wonderful day. With Warm Regards, MargaretiTunes Store Customer Support |

I don't understand how the App developers have anything to do with the Apples APP STORE runs.. Still sounds like a problem on apples end, and its just trying to be covered up.. Badly I might add.

Yea I had it too, still do sometimes, not sure what it is, probably something to do with 3G or Wifi going out.

Here is the email I sent after receiving the one above from Margaret at iTunes Support:
Margaret - I am not the expert at these things, but - it is clearly not the app or developers that are causing the problem. It is the Apple App Store updates 'system' that is broken. If this was a developer issue then why are iPhones showing the need to update a variety of apps on the phone? The developer initially builds their app and Apple puts it up on their App Store 'system'. When the developer updates an app to a new version, Apple gets it and notifies users thru the App Store. It is not the developers who notify the users of an available update, it is Apple. So, this problem is at Apple and not with the developers. It is the app update notification system at Apple. You need to report this problem to your superiors and get someone to fix it. And here is her reply: Margaret, here from the iTunes Store. Thank you for your reply, your insights on the subject and your concern. However, as I said before, Apple is investigating this issue. As for now, if you haven't already, you may go ahead and delete your Apps and re-download them at any time to remedy the problem. Please let me know how you make out and if you require any further assistance with this as I would be glad to help. Thanks for your continued loyalty to Apple and have a wonderful day! With Warm Regards, MargaretiTunes Store Customer Support SO - Has anyone tried her suggestion of deleting all your apps and reloading? |

I wouldn't be that hasty. I have about 100 and I wouldn't redownload anything. Actually it doesn't seem to be having a problem as of recently. <crosses fingers>

how did you get rid of the old ones? Right now i have 9 apps that supposedly need updating. They date all the way back to 08. They never go away even if i enter the app store, close it, and reopen it.
Ideas? |

I seem to be having this problem also.
For me it seems to be related to the fact I changed the email address on my iTunes account. It only seems to effect the apps I purchased when I was using my .mac email address. Anyone finding the same? |

I actually haven't had a problem for quite awhile... I can't think of anything I did that would have fixed it, it just stopped.

Also stopped for me, sometime around the time iTunes 8.1 arrived and they made some associated changes in the App Store.

Tap the update icon again. In my experience, that made the repeats go away. They haven't come back for some time now.
