Xfig replacement on Mac OS X.

I would like to avoid installing yet another program (Darwin) in order to install the one I want, if you get my drift.
MacPorts is pretty small in comparison and offers an easy way to install a whole host of Linux / Unix software. It is highly recommended.
You'll need to install the Apple Developer Tools whatever you do anyway and that is a few GB's of stuff so I wouldn't worry too much about MacPorts.
There is one other solution
You can use JPicEdt, it has similar functionalities

Problem installing xfig (actually, darwinports)
As a preliminary to installing xfig on my mac, I downloaded and installed Darwinports 1.7, but while running
sudo port -d selfupdate
I get stuck with the error message:

rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at /SourceCache/rsync/rsync-35.2/rsync/clientserver.c(105) [receiver=2.6.9]
Error: Synchronization of the local ports tree failed doing rsync
DEBUG: Couldn't sync the ports tree: Synchronization of 1 source(s) failed
while executing
"macports::selfupdate [array get global_options]"
Error: /opt/local/bin/port: port selfupdate failed: Couldn't sync the ports tree: Synchronization of 1 source(s) failed

and I cannot proceed since the local tree is not sync_ed with the server.
Can anyone help??

xfig + Inkscape
Hi,
I wouldn't say that people should replace xfig by Inkscape. Both programs have advantages and disdvantages. I find xfig better to make schematic diagrams without color gradients... You can also directly write .fig files from gnuplot to make nice curves you can easily customize...
Xfig can also be installed via "Fink Commander". It is really easy to install.
One of the problem to use xfig is that it requires the middle click on mac OS. You can however simulate a middle click by pressing the "alt" key when left-clicking. This should works fine if you selected "Emulate three button mouse" in the preference of "X11".

xfig presently has no maintainer on MacPorts, and there is presently a pretty bad bug making Text Fields uneditable (although you can delete and create a new one, or edit the .fig file directly).
