As I understand it, the light sensor is supposed to dim the screen in a dark room, and brighten it up once in a well lighted area.

My iPhone does the exact opposite, it brightens up when I get in the dark and it dims down when I am in a well lighted room.
 
That's what mine does. I don't know if it's a bug or a problem with the sensor. Now that you mention it, I am going to take mine to my local Apple Store for some clarification.
