You should do a full charge/discharge/charge cycle when you first get it and every few months afterwards.

Don't charge it every day, unless you need the charge to get throough the day.

When you plug the iPod in to update music, you should let it charge all the way.

My iPod is over 21 months old and is still on the original battery.
