£1.50 for 12 fizzy drinks? That's not too bad. A 6 pack of Coca Cola is £2 at my local corner shop.

It's not uncommon to see our supermarket have sales on where a 24/30 pack go for about AUD$0.35-0.40 per can.

I bought a 12 pack of Diet Coke with Lime at Wal-Mart last weekend for $4.48 cents before tax.

So, they give you the tax back on the deposit too?
![]() (Assuming the OP was correct, and the deposit value was also included in the tax calculation, and not just printed above it.)

The deposit isn't taxed, it just appears first on the receipt as a matter of style.
Not that half the people remember to deposit their cans anyway; most of the time, they recycle them in public receptacles and never get the money back. |

I think my family would be in the poor house if they started doing the deposits on soda cans. We drink way too much soda

The price for soda anywhere is ridiculous; to save my health and wallet I have made soda a weekend only expense and switched to teas during the week.

I just paid $5.99 for a 24 pack of Coke at Shaw's here in New England.
I still call it "Pop."

I'm guessing you are not originally from New England. No native New Englander I know uses "pop". Near Boston it is "tonic" (said like a true Bostonian) everywhere else it is "soda". The nearest place I've heard "pop" was Buffalo.

Has the state gotten any closer to their proposed extra tax on non-diet sodas? I heard the idea floated around here in Massachusetts since then. Thanks NY for coming up with that idea! That would just add one more thing to wait and get in New Hampshire (along with gasoline if the new tax goes through making MA higher than even California and Connecticut).

Doesn't that make it cheaper than water?

It is designed to encourage recycling, but most states that feature such programs only apply it to carbonated beverages (soda, some energy drinks, beer, wine coolers). These policies need to be updated because of the prevalence of bottled water, bottled milk, sports drinks, and juices. In fact, I'd like to see a ~$0.25+ deposit applied to non-beverage containers. THOSE are the ones that are HUGE, contain chemical residue, and seem to be recycled very infrequently (i.e. detergent, bleach, liquid soap, hair care bottles, household cleaners, etc.) |

From the midwest on I've heard pop, except in the South as well. Kind of weird to order a Coke and get asked "what kind?". I was ordering a Coke to forestall any "pop" vs "soda" vs "tonic" misunderstandings in the first place. So as not to sound like I stuttered, I just replied "Sprite".
