Gallery and Notes about iPhone OS 3.0

Images from iLounge
iLounge and AppleInsider have posted good screenshot galleries of the new iPhone 3.0 operating system that was seeded to developers yesterday. Other collections include Engadget, Boy Genius Report, and MobileCrunch.

A few notes from the different galleries:

- Spotlight (search) is said to work well
- SMS messages are sent in the background, which means you can type a new message while the old one is sending
- Notes can be used in landscape
- "Find my iPhone/iPod Touch" option available under MobileMe, which presumably allows you to locate your iPhone from Me.com
- Backups of your iPhone or iPod Touch can be encrypted in iTunes
- Notes will sync

The QuickTime stream for yesterday's event demonstrates many of the new features found in iPhone 3.0. The 3.0 firmware will be available to end-users this summer.

Looks fantastic. SMS is what it should always have been like.

Notes sync, yes!

The encryption will help get this adopted across enterprises too.

Find my iPod?

I wonder if this is more like "it was stolen, what city is it in?" or more like "it's somewhere in the house, please make my iPod beep!"

I'd think the second option would be more useful, personally.

Spotlight

I can't wait for this update for a lot of reasons, but the one thing that gives me pause is the addition of a spotlight tool. I can see how this might end up being very sluggish on the current hardware. I'd really like to hear more from developers as to how this was implemented and whether or not the system resources handle it well.

Except that SMS doesn't work on the first gen. iPhone. To me, that's incredibly disappointing. It seems like Apple is trying to make it so a person has to switch to a iPhone 3G in order to get all of the features the phone should have had years ago. Overall, still a good update though.

Can you cancel a SMS/MMS while it is being sent?
What about notes (and to-do) syncing over MobileMe into iCal and Mail?

So I have to ask...

Notes will sync, alright.

To what though? A new App in iTunes, Notes on the Mac, the notes Widget??

You mean MMS. SMS is the text-only messaging service.

To the Mail app on OS X, I'm sure.

If it will sync with Outlook or other mail programs, I don't know.

Good point. Apple need to get notes and todos sorted out consistently. All this "is it in Mail or in iCal?" nonsense has to stop.

These two functions are 50% of the reason for a PDA for me. I know the iPhone isn't a PDA but if Google can get this (almost) right then surely Apple can.

I've switched from using mobileme to using Google now for the above reason.

I wonder if that is something At$t is stipulating since the data plan for 3G is $10 more the Original iPhone.

But then again you would think they would offer an option to upgrade to a more expensive plan if that was the case.

OK my question is this to those who are using 3.0...Is it worth just paying $99 for a dev pass so I can get it. Or is it buggy enough that I would want to wait until the final release. That is my big question right now. Answers please. Thanks in advance.

Calendar

What about the calendar and todos?

Can we accept calendar updates/invites now?
Can we sync with the todos?

I doubt it, because the texts aren't part of the data plan.

Voice - Texts - Data

AT&T treats those 3 things as different billable items.

Overall looks like a pretty good update. Hadn't heard about the locating through mobileme, that is awesome. I could have used it the other day as I was searching for my phone. Was hiding in the truck. I imagine it would enable a map to see where it is. Which would be cool. Sure you can call it, but if its outside your not gonna hear it. And then you still have to go room to room.

My question is why won't the 1st gen support MMS?? Honestly i've gotten used to just sending pictures in emails to peoples phones. Little more cumbersome but not bad, and its free. I imagine AT&T will want more money for MMS too.
