That never actually left. They never stopped selling it to the education market.
In that... they made an entirely different version than any that they sold in the past just FOR the education market. It has an Intel GMA950 in it. |

Was that in any of the 17" models before? If so maybe they are just clearing stock?

I cant find it.
![]() I even tried different school districts. From my wife's district. $1,149.00 for the 20-inch. Is the only one we can see. Is it only available to actual schools, For school use. Or can staff purchase it for personal use.

I got one at the UK refurb store in September 2007 for about the price of a new Mac Mini of nearly equivalent spec. Anyone tried fitting more than 2GB, i.e. does it do like the older Mac Minis and still take advantage of dual channel but only report 3GB?

I haven't found this said "link" either, though the text is there.
This is likely available only directly to institutions in volume purchases. Users can get one only if their institution decides to sell them to students/faculty themselves... Not "new" - they've always had it available...

Unless you REALLY want a 17", I don't know why you'd buy that. You can get a 20"/2.4GHz in the refurb store for $849 and it comes with an independent GPU, Superdrive, faster processor, larger hard drive, upgradable to 4GB RAM and probably faster FSB; I bet the 17" has an 800MH FSB while the refurb has a 1067MHz FSB. It's clearly designed for schools on a budget who want Macs but can't afford $1000 per machine.

The problem with this machine is that it's been out way too long and is not worth the price considering... I mean look at the specs. Right now it's a FAIL for education, esp. in this economy. If they are going to continue selling it, it should be $599.

Interesting. The district I work at switched from exclusively Macs to exclusively windows XP about 4 years ago on one factor- price. Apparently they figured that removing all the Macs and replacing them with the cheapest Dells they could find was a good move. Never mind the fact that something like 15% failed right out of the box or that they had to hire additional IT staff and actually PAY staff to attend trainings on how to use the machines. In my opinion, and the opinion of many others, the "experiment" with windows has been an unmitigated failure.
Sadly, when a Dell Optiplex can be had for less than $300 there's now way a $899 iMac can compete. Ultimately in my district it's all about what's cheap, not what's good.

I'd consider that guy for 599!
For 899, bad deal. But Apple should have that type of machine, but updated

I think kabanaru is on to something here. I was just on engadget a few minutes ago and there was a story about this, and then five minutes later it was gone.

Any word on the specs?
Needs at least a 2ghz Core 2 and the 9400M to be worth $899. Or they could easily sell the last gen 20" for $899. |
