Simply is it possible?
Considering PCI-E 2's extra bandwidth does nothing for this card (already limited by the GPU in terms of performance), is it possible to get one of these for my 1st generation Mac Pro?

It will be the same issue as with the 8800 GT. Begging and pleading at Steve's inbox to get them to produce the GT 120 for their existing customers when the difference between the two cards is very minor.
This is pretty disappointing for a 2006 workstation (costing over $5000 at the time). Well it's my fault. I should have known I was dealing with Apple and their stupid upgrade path in the first place. After years of using Mac, I simply have no more reason to buy their hardware. The OS + Final Cut + Aperture is great, but I can find replacements
PS: And before you get all worked up, I did purchase the 8800GT for Mac Pro the day that the compatible version came out. I need another graphics card to run 2 more monitors
The 4870 is still an option. Keep in mind that the HD2600XT and GT120 (9500GT/8600GT) can exchange blows when it comes to gaming. Core Image is on ATi's side.
