Apparently my friend has pages 08 on her MB and it doesn't offer an option to save in Word 97 format. Any help?

You should be able to export in Word format... not save in '08
It is a separate option in the drop down menu

the problem is it does not seem to be there
Not sure exactly what you mean by this "Word Document" isn't present in the drop down or the drop down itself isn't there? If it's the latter, you need to switch to the fullsize save box. Screenshots from '09 because it's what I have now, but I remember this being much the same in '08:

Try "exporting" the file instead of Save[ing] as. Go to the File menu, click on Export, select Word, then tell it where to save the file.
