2TB Time Capsule in the Works?

Apple just updated the Airport Extreme and Time Capsule last month, so we don't know if the timing is right for a storage bump, but tipster Brandon just noticed that the ClubMac's promo pic of the TC box features an unmistakable 2TB badge. Makes sense to us -- 500GB is laughably small for a device designed to back up multiple machines, and standard-height 2TB drives are becoming commonplace.

Image of 2 TB Time Capsule Box?

Apple retailer ClubMac's 500 GB Time Capsule page is currently displaying an image (shown above) of a 2 TB Time Capsule retail box in its "Product Detail" section. Apple's Time Capsule combination wireless router and network-attached storage drive is currently available only in 500 GB ($299) and 1 TB ($499) models.

The original source of the image used on ClubMac's site is unknown, though promotional product images typically come from the manufacturer (Apple).

It'd be hard for me to pass up the 2 TB if they offered it for the current high-end price. I'm using a 1 TB drive connected to a AE, but I'd love to be able to keep it ALL backed up.

That would be a great deal if Apple kept the same price point!

There better be a price drop for the 500gb and 1TB because that is kind of expensive compared to other external hd system and similar systems. But 2tb does sound pretty tempting though.

Not bad. Now if only they'd eliminate the 500GB and replace the 1TB with the 2TB keeping the same price points.

Honestly though I just bought 2 - 1TB Seagate Firewire 800 drives one just for time Machine for my iMac and MBA and the other for extra storage for $360 and they've been working great from me. I even set up a partition just for my MBA to do it's backups wirelessly so I would really not need this, but I like it.

Time Capsule is too limited, Apple needs to change it into this but with Apple's design:

With 1TB+ hard drives becoming more common, it would make a lot of sense.

Get rid of the 500gb, or slash all the prices...

I think as we're seeing an across the board increase in the baseline hd's being shipped with Macs, seeing a bump like this is inevitable.

Would be cool if there was some new software in the works to also use the TC as a home media server with total integration of iTunes, Front Row, etc.

Apple would probably remove the 500GB model, and lower the price of the 1TB model.

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.60 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.2.13918/720; U; en) Presto/2.2.0)

If this becomes the $500 high-end then great. If this costs $700 or whatever then no.

In any case, this is a little surprising because they just updated TC a month ago with the desktop refresh.

That's how Apple used to do updates. Recently they've been favouring adding to the product lines and keeping underpowered, overpriced devices on the line to justify even higher prices for the top-end models.

If they make the Time Capsules 1Tb and 2Tb for the same prices, I'll buy one.

Interesting. Now just release a software update that lets me use this as a wireless iTunes server and I'm sold.

I agree!

Only thing I can think of hampering that would be the music/movie industry for some copy right reason. Apple doesn't want to screw over relations due to their lucrative itunes store.

/Seems far fetched ... but who knows ....

If this is two 1TB drives striped then I'd be a little concerned. A back up should not have twice the failure potential built in.
Maybe I worry too much.

Drool ...

I so want one of these ...

Looking to replace the household's Netgear router and migrate to a better family backup solution. 2TB would be quite the ticket. The Time Capsule offers so many other advantages and features over my Netgear setup as well. I just hope you don't need to take out a second mortgage to get one of these once it releases.

It can't be. There isn't room for two drives.

is it possible to fit 2TB in current form factor? I have yet to see an external HD that can fit 2TB drive into anything that is not fat.

A month ago I bought the new 500MB model of the Time Capsule, with an eye toward upgrading the hard drive to a 1TB model. hmm! Right now 2TB disks are $300, which is crazy. But those wonderful 1.5TB drives are looking mighty attractive, so... hmm, prolly go that way

April fools day fake that no one noticed until today?

Doubt it. Cause it really is too believable.

-

But really. I would get one if it acted as a media server for my laptop. I need to plug in my 1TB media library everytime I use itunes. It sucks.

Time Capsules are wayyyyy to expensive.

Apple really needs to revisit their pricing strategies.

Hoping it's true

I would love a 2TB TC. I hope it comes true soon. That sure would give me plenty of backup space and even last another year down the road.
