Sending Key Codes to the kernel

Hi, I am trying to recapture my Vol+/Vol-/Mute functionality with this new Windows keyboard. I need to send these special keycodes to the kernel, probably disguised as a USB device, in order to get this to work. Can anyone clue me in on how to do this?
