I wanted to get my 3rd Gen ipod back up and running after it has been out of commission since its 15Gb hard drive died. i bought this and put it in the ipod. I then connected the ipod to the computer via firewire (the cable that came with the iPod. and it would not show up in itunes.
When the drive booted after being connected to a power supply i got passed the apple but came to a folder with and exclamation point. the drive loops then loops till the battery dies.
The drive was formated as MS-DOS i use mac so i reformatted the drive to be mac os Extended.
Finally got the drive to appear in iTunes, Itunes says "itunes has detected and iPod that appears to be corrupted. you may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. you may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod." I click "OK"
In the Summary window of iTunes it displays the iPod Name: "iPod" Capacity: "n/a" software version: "n/a" serial Number: "n/a".
At this point Update is not available so i select "restore"
Restoring "iPod"... window appears.
and yet again "The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. and Unknown error occurred (1429)" window appears. and the options Help and OK are available. help takes you here and Ok takes me back to iTunes where the iPod has now disappeared from the lists on the side.
I then unplugged the ipod and re-plugged it back in multiple times back and forth between usb and firewire. and it finally mounted after resetting and re-plugging.
I opened up disk utility and saw that there was no partition for the iPod all that was there was the drive.
I took the iPod to my friend who opened up disk utility and his showed that there was a partition that was named disk3s1 (or something like that). After erasing the partition we put the format back to MS-DOS to see if iTunes would convert it. to the right one.
I then took the iPod back to my computer and plugged it in with usb. I just received the corrupted iPod message (like above). tried "restore and update" and got "You must connect sing Firewire to restore the iPod "iPod". I also recieve the same Help and OK as above.
I switch to firewire, after i unplug from usb i see on the iPod "Ok to disconnect". "do not disconnect appears when i plug in the firewire. itunes then says again "itunes has detected and iPod that appears to be corrupted. you may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes."
"restore and update" again... "restoring ipod" (window comes and goes looks successful via status bar). But not get same "The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. and Unknown error occurred (1429)" window. and ipod is ejected again. ipod says
"Ok to disconnect". even after unplug.
Interesting development, after i plug in the ipod via firewire. According to disk utility it is now formated as Mac OS Extended (journaled). but there is no partition.
"Restore" again.... "Restoring ipod" (window comes and goes looks successful via status bar). Error 1429 AGAIN!!!!
now do i 1. re-partition the drive with one partition or 2. Erase the disk and make it a Mac OS Extended?
