All your application windows have been minimized to the Dock.




I never minimize my windows anymore. Not with handy Panther Exposé anyhow.
 
so you've caught someone using your Mac via this method?

well that wouldn't exactly work with me... i minimize my windows sometimes, especially now that i've got that haxie that lets you have 'cmd' tap twice as minimize window... that gets kinda annoying.

i've got to try and use expose more.

i usually leave all my windows open... so i can tell if anyone's touched it if the windows and hidden apps are out of order. 😛

a guy in my class knew that someone had been using his computer when they left open a Finder window that had things in it he didn't want other people to see. 😉 that's heaps more fun than trying to sneak onto peoples computer. 😀
 
Once, I left my cousin to use my Mac. When I got back, I found practically every application sitting in the Dock, running, with all their windows closed.

He now owns a 17" iMac. 🙂

As a switcher, that is one habit it has taken me a very long time to get over—the expectation that closing a window will quit an app. 😀

Of course, the Mac way is better, in some ways. It's nice to be able to keep apps open without having to keep a window open or minimized.

I almost never minimize windows on my Macs though. I'd rather hide the app with the windows open or close the windows. Minimizing wastes dock space and makes the dock look ugly.
 
Yep, I always hide apps too. I can press Command-H without thinking 🙂

Except for in Photoshop, which doesn't conform to the standard 😡

I don't know how many times I've click Command-H in Photoshop like 10 times in frustration before realizing that it doesn't use the standard. Then I guess at what it does use, and 9 times out of 10 hit the "Hide All Other Apps" instead. GRRRR. You'd think Adobe could get this right at least!

that's what my sister does 😛 gets annoying when I have my own account in the background encoding video or such.. dunno why she does that - we've had macs all my life. guess she's been using too much pc at school or something
 
actually its a big problem when i use pc..especially annoying if i m listening to itunes on my frend's pc...and i close the window..after first goin to the top left... 🙄 ...and dang...it quits..... 😱

You can tell if a pc-user has been on my computer when you find a folder in documents, that is labled: Thereisnoporninhere! 🙂
 
I switched to Mac in September, and still minimize out of habit. I didn't know about hiding apps!

Thanks for the info. Maybe I should get a "Panther for Dummies" book 🙄
 
ugh, I always hate seeing people in the viscom computer labs and minimize stuff. Seriously, Apple should take that out. Make the minus button collapse in space like in OS9. Then I'd freakin use it all de time! Anyway, I usually hide or Cmd+W in certain apps (iTunes, iCal, ect. al). Never minimize, unless I want to see a genie effect.

...and just when you think you figured it all out, you launch iPhoto and realize that the app will quit when you close down the window... 😕
 
Get CMD-H to always work

Apple H even works while you are Apple-tabbing, meaning that you can hide (as well as quit) an App that is not hidden but also not the foreground window. So cool!

Right. Everybody knows the OS X way to hide porn is inside an encrypted sparse image labled "thereisnoporninhere". Just unmount it when you're done or you might get embarassed.

Now that you mention it, when did the closed apple go away? I remember it from the II-C but don't think I've seen one since.

You see this quite a lot at the Apple stores. It's funny to see Safari stretched open all the way across an iMac 17" display.

I've never been a PC user, and I keep my Safari windows open so that they fill the entire screen. I know I am probably one of a handful of people that do though.

Yeah, this is the one i have a problem with. Since most of my PC using friends are just used to having windows maximized at all times, by default, they get all sorts of confused when my browser windows are 800x600, so you can actually move them around and navigate between them... i can't get people to stick to it.

i still use it, but i think it should definatly be an option to minimize or collapse.

you can change most ever key shortcut in photoshop. i changed cmd-h to hide. i also changed the doc's opt-cmd-d hide/show to photoshop's feather instead.
