Any chance of a new Apple TV anytime soon?

Hi

Does anyone think we're due for a newer model? I don't currently own one but what are you expecting (or what do you think needs to be present) for a newer model?

Am I right in thinking that the hardware hasn't been updated since March 2007?

I get the feeling that the Apple TV will get the same refresh cycle as games consoles. Hardware updates every few years, but price drops inbetween.

I just bought a second one. That guarantees a hardware update this summer. It never fails...

I've been wondering the same thing.

I've been wanting to get a :apple:tv for the last 3 months or so, but then I thing gee, two years since an update.

I'm going to waint untill the end of June i think.
 
Wondering the Same Thin

I finally cut my Time Warner Cable ($144 per month!) and trying to figure out if I should just get an AppleTV or a Mac Mini. Any thoughts? I'm with wackymacky - I think I'll wait until the end of June.
 
I expect the nextgen Apple TV to be delivered June or later

My prediction is that the nextgen Apple TV will be based on the same platform that the iPhone/iPod Touch uses.

This means ARM processing and Imagination PowerVR SGX graphics. Apple may allow the Apple TV to be targetted for lite gaming but who knows.

The reasons for this are clear.

1. ARM/PowerVR SoC designs are cheaper than Pentium M/Geforce Go and use considerably less heat.

2. It will allow Apple to dovetail right into their own custom chips for the refresh after this upcoming unit. The more chips they can utilize in their own product the more they stand to recoup costs.

3. iPhone SDK 3.0 is finally mature enough to branch out beyond the phone.
 
I feel like we're definitely due for an update. I'd say the iPod event later this year would be the most likely candidate. I'd like Apple to release an iTunes home server with tons of storage and ATVs without hard drives that would just stream from the server... 😀:apple:

That's certainly the direction they need to go. Once Apple "trains" people to consolidate their media onto a "media server" of some sort it then becomes easier to manage and there isn't the need to keep a computer running.

Plus a media server could link to an Airport Extreme/Time Capsule and stream over a WAN connection or retrieve files.

The Time Capsule already uses a Marvell chip that is also used in NAS devices. Apple would only need put a slightly beefier chip into a storage device and add a decent amount of RAM.

Apple has been buying up a lot of NAND memory lately. I wonder if they plan to offer a driveless ATV with just enough NAND memory to buffer your typical HD movie from iTunes.

I think streaming is the key to making these devices more affordable.

Apple could do that, I guess it all depends on how Apple feels about clutter. At this point even having some sort of network storage access to the Apple TV that is blessed by Apple feels like a gift.
 
The AppleTV is certainly due for an update. However, there aren't any reliable sources out there indicating that one is on its way.

The one thing that has surprised me is that they haven't at least bumped the HD capacity. Hard drive prices continue to plummet, but apple keeps selling the same hardware for the same price. Just like the Time Capsule, it would make so much sense to double the HD capacity and keep the existing price points.

Bumping a Time Capsule makes sense. Bumping the local storage on a Media Extender is anti-thetical to the point of the device. A HTPC (Home Theater PC) is designed around local storage. A Media Extender is designed to be a smaller STB that should have a dearth of local storage and leverages the network.

Apple can really hit both but they need a low cost ATV that is available at $149 or so.
 
I think first comes apple home server, then comes updates to current atv software and new, flash-drive only apple tvs (as someone said, enough flash mem just to buffer).
 
I'm starting to think that this year we are finally going to see an update to the Apple TV. Not sure when, might not even be till the iPod event in September, but I can't imagine them waiting till next year.

I'd go with a mini. With the money you're saving on cable, you'll pay for it in a few months. I have an ATV and love it, but the Hulu vs. Boxee thing is getting annoying. With no cable, having Hulu access is pretty important (unless you have good OTA reception for the regular network stuff). With a mini, you won't have problems accessing Hulu, even if it means having to go through a regular browser. With the ATV, it's been a cat-and-mouse game.

Hulu has been pretty solid on Boxee ever since they started using the browser interface in the past update. I haven't had any problems with Hulu since...
 
I've been wanting an AppleTV so bad.. but there's gotta be a new one soon. It would be too painful to buy one now then finally have a new version released this summer. I guess on the bright side, it gives me time to rip more of my dvd collection.
 
I have a feeling that we will get a significant update to the :apple:TV this summer, it may just be wishful thinking because I want a second one for my Bedroom though!

Come on Apple give us what we want!!
