Apple Announces Free Summer Workshops for Kids

Apple has announced a series of free workshops at its retail stores targeted at children ages 8-12. Known as Apple Camp, the program consists of four three-hour workshops targeting such skills as movies, music, photos, and presentations. Workshops are offered in the latter half of July at most Apple retail stores, although not all locations will be offering all four workshops.

Participants are limited to two of the four sessions and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Apple will be provide all necessary equipment and sample media, although participants are welcome to bring their own media and equipment if they desire.

Pre-registration is required, and many of the sessions have already been booked solid, with some offering positions on wait lists while others are closed entirely.

Harkens back to the summer programming camps offered through schools and a non-profit called I.E.R. back in the early 80's in the Chicago area. Lots of kids learning BASIC on Apple IIe's.

This is more of a light version, though focusing on apps, not programming.

Is this program new?

I was at the apple store for an interview the other week, and they told me about it as if they'd been doing it for years

They have had this for a few years now. They're just promoting it a little more now I guess.

Having been a parent in a class where a kid was dropped off..... i can only hope they enforce this.

I'm bummed they are full - i had been forgetting to check on them. My kids enjoyed them immensely 2 summers ago. Gas prices kept us home last summer - i was hoping they could do one this summer.

oh well.....

So, announced this morning, and camps already full?

Apple doesn't want to sell too many new Macs, I guess...

i got an email about this yesterday..

still sessions open in Oregon and Iowa. Wait list in Alabama.. haha

they probably had room for 5 to 6 kids and then 5 to 6 adults. so i can see why they would fill up quick.

So is this in the U.S. only? It looks like it is. That's too bad, my kids would love to do this...

It was actually announced yesterday. These classes always fill up very quickly each and every year. My family last year had some kids at ones in South Beach and Soho, and they filled up within hours of the announcement. Of course Apple wants to sell Macs; they can't help how quickly these things fill up. And if you're thinking that they should open more sessions since they filled up so fast.... Trust me, they're full to the rim with the stores ability to manage the ones they have so far. Running these camps ain't easy by any means.

Of course, judging by your screen name, maybe I care more about responding to you and hoping to alleviate your frustration than you care to even read this post.

If that's true, then my bad, bro'.

It is full here, which negates the point of announcing it.

I took my daughter to an iMovie camp last year. She had fun, met some new people, and got to take home a DVD. For me, the price was right.

Get 'em while they're young!

So on one hand I have my kids pediatrician telling us that we should limit our kids to 30 minutes of screen time PER DAY and it's summer, let them run around outside get exercise and fresh air and on the other apple beckoning my kids with crack, I mean a Mac.

My little cousin Shaun would have loved this, looks like Buchanan Street is fully booked as far as I can make out from the website.

Imagine if all of us MacRumors folk turned up en masse at all these different Apple Stores, wearing adult-sized versions of kids clothing, bibs, etc., and asking to sign up for Apple Camp...

They'll be sure to be carding at the entrance if it were to get out of hand - otherwise, it might actually fly, as long as everyone were to remain low key, and above all, readily helpful to those in need.

if i was the parent, i personally couldn't stand being in a stuffy and probably crowded (knowing my local Apple stores) store for 3 hours.
