Artist Rendition of 5G iPod Nano with Camera?

iLounge posts an artist rendition of what it believes the next-generation iPod nano will look like. According to the site, the new iPod nano will see a wider screen (1:5:1 ratio), smaller click wheel, and built-in camera.
Quote:
Finally, there’s a camera on the back in an unusual location, one which conceivably might be blocked by hands… except when the iPod nano is corner-gripped for photography. It will debut at the same time as the new iPod touch, between July and September. Our gut feeling is September.
The report seems to confirm a recent claim from HardMac that the new iPod Nano will contain a camera. Of interest, HardMac also said in the same report that the next iPod Touch would also include a camera. Both models are expected to be refreshed around September of this year.

Not sideways, which would be the appropriate way to hold it for picture taking. Right thumb hits the center button, click!

But no, it's an iPod. There will be no camera.

Hey, Senor Arrogant Know-it-All. Newsflash. You don't know it all. You know as much as we do, a camera could happen. Stop acting like you're some godly thing that knows all things Apple inside out and products to come.

A camera would be revolutionary. Want a camera? Just buy a new iPod. People would go crazy for it.

That really is a bit of a bizarre place to put it. Perhaps the screen and thinness of the device is limiting its placement.

I don't think this will happen.
The Apple we know would never do this.

OMG, don't tell me MacRumors will now be dedicating threads to "artist renditions" in the main news forum.

So I get that it could work, given you only take pics while holding the iPod in landscape, but there's no button to press to actually take the picture! You'd think the artist who rendered this would have put in a little button - pressing the click-wheel while holding it in landscape would be crazy.

Crazier than a camera on a nano?

iPhone? How is THAT different from the iPhone? It has a relatively odd spot for a camera and in landscape mode you have to press a screen with no tactile feel. I think a camera on a MP3 player is strange and generally not needed with the fact that most phones have good camera and it will surely increase the cost of the iPod. I hope they offer a model sans the camera for less as I could not justify spending even $15 extra dollars for an addition that will not ONCE be used by me or my wife - or even my children.

You don't know how much of a profit Apple makes on the nano. It could be cheap to produce - which it most likely is - so that the addition of a camera may be nothing more than a slight cut into their profit off the device.

I could see MP3 players getting cameras. The whole issue, though, is that cameras are becoming very ubiquitous and potentially too common on devices now.

A fairly cheap music/video device... with the added bonus of a (hopefully - but probably, given recent rumors) video camera with enough capacity to make it all worthwhile as a holiday/ vacation toy?

Not a bad idea for your 'other' iPod...

I'd buy one.

Well it's in the logical place for a camera on the nano if you hold it in landscape mode (the back-of-nano image is rather poor, it would have been better to flip the nano horizontally instead of vertically when creating the mock-up) and your right thumb would be on the wheel to adjust zoom and take the image.

However it would be a very small camera unit to fit in the ~3mm internal thickness of the nano there. Optical zoom seems unlikely, as with camera phones. I expect it would be a cheap ~2mp sensor.

I can understand a camera on the iPod touch. Not really on the nano, still if they can add it for a dollar or two, and it works well, then why not - apart from it breaking Apple's rules about device functionality (usability over features).

Sometimes I wonder if these rumors are based in truth or are deliberately put out there to get Apple's competitors scrambling. MS will now be distracted into spending all kinds of time and money trying to figure out how to put a camera into the next Zune...

What about a "Spy" camera on the Shuffle. Forget the Nano. Of course you can't preview the images but that is how the old style film cameras worked.

Honestly, I think that this is a poor photoshop job and probably not based on what might be an actual production model as the camera's in the wrong place. That's all I want to say about that.

Don't you see what's going on here!? This man is dieing!!

I mean, Apple is getting into the camera business!

It's not an iPod with a camera, it's a camera with an iPod in it!

I'm not being serious at all!!

spare me!

Yeah, I'm in agreement with most people concerning the placement of the camera. That is like the dumbest place to put it.

right... since that's the logical place to put the lens.

why do people like to make such silly mock-ups, like we couldn't picture the current nano with a lens somewhere on it? drawing a mustache on it would have been classier.

Barely looks like a camera anyway.

More like a hold switch. . .

So the question is: is the iPod classic end of life`d?
It seems to be getting less and less attention lately...

I doubt it, as flash still can't touch even 1.8" HDDs in price/ GB. However, the weird thing is, there hasn't been any manufacturer I know of that has announced >120 GB slim 1.8" Hard Drives. Someone tell me if there is one which isn't 8mm.
