Logitech Z 5500 + MBA

Hello all, I recently got a macbook air and I have logitech z 5500 from when I had my last pc. I bought a mini toslink - toslink cable and have it plugged in the optical output to my logitech control center.

however, no sound...

I have tried getting Perian and following some steps I was reading about Audio MIDI setup, but there is no option to select anything for "source" except for "headphones"...

how can I get these speakers to work on my macbook air?

Thanks!

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong.. but I don't believe the air has a digital out from the headphone jack like the rest of the macbooks have... You need to go analog out.

... Analog out? So there is no way to hook up my Logitech z 5500 speakers?

Well.. according to this page the z5500 does have analog inputs, but only for each set of channels. So yes, it will work, but if the controller doesn't have some kind of "room fill" feature, only 2 speaks will work.

There is still only one method of hooking it the speakers to the laptop though.. which is from the headphone jack to the digital optical output.. so how can i get analog?

is there no driver i can download for the headphone jack to recognize this digital output?

the hardware on the air is not capable of digital audio output.

Couldn't the OP get a USB DAC?

Edit:
Or use AirTunes with an Airport Express?

You have 2 options:

1) Either take the cable with the green/yellow/black ends and plug it in only the green cable to your MacBook Air's audio out. It'll work fine for analog audio.

2) If you want to step it up to digital audio, buy the Airport Express and connect the Z-5500 to it using the optical cable. Then, listen to your music wirelessly via Airtunes.

Thanks for the help here. Plugging in the green cable works good enough for me, sounds fine, just no true surround.
