Is there an app that will change the volume of different programs?

There was an application that did this, that was actually made by the same company as Audio Hijack.

The program is actually still available for free download (at that link), but only works on PPCs and on Panther and Tiger. RA discuss in a link on that page why they decided to stop developing it (I think it actually has a pretty great function, and it's too bad that feature didn't appear in its full form in Audio Hijack or elsewhere).

Hmmm....can you give me more details on this? I have quicksilver (I don't use it much...spotlight works well enough for me) but I can't seem to figure out how to create a "shortcut" for muting/changing the volume of different programs....

  1. Launch Quicksilver
  2. Hold down Command + "," to show Preferences
  3. Click Triggers.
  4. Click the Plus (+) button in the bottom left corner of the window.
  5. Choose HotKey from drop down.
  6. Type in Mute and then click "Save".
  7. Go back to Triggers and click on Mute Volume trigger.
  8. Click where it says None under the Trigger column.
  9. Hold down the keys for this Trigger in the Hot Keys field.

I think the OP is looking to change the volume of applications independently -- like selectively mute just Firefox or make iTunes (only) louder or make Adium softer. I'm not sure that Quicksilver can do that unless the app in question has triggerable volume controls (iTunes for instance, I think, does, but not every other application does)? Doesn't this trigger just mute the system volume? How is it any different than hitting the mute button on the keyboard?
 
Sorry about that. At least you will now know how to add a shortcut later on if you do find a custom volume script/app.

Correct - I am indeed looking to change the volume of programs independently of one another.

Is this really not possible in OS X??? Even w/ a third party app?
