Best Buy iPhone Shortages and More iPhone Production Rumors

Best Buy is reported to have issued a memo indicating that iPhone 3G supplies were now in constraint, according to AppleInsider. The reports follows other claims that 16GB iPhone had been "end of life'd" in Australia.

In addition to these reports, Digitimes reported last week that 5 Taiwan-based circuit board manufacturers had already started shipping parts for the new iPhone which is expected in June. Taken together, there seems to be increasing evidence that a new iPhone will be revised at or around WWDC. Over the weekend, even some possible screen photos of the new iPhone were revealed from a Hong Kong based site but were quickly removed.

Meanwhile, analysts are still speculating about what processor might drive the new iPhone. Most expect that Apple will still be using off-the-shelf parts as they are unlikely to have yet had the time to ramp up their own custom chip production. For what it's worth, MacRumors has heard that Apple will indeed be using the ARM Cortex for the next iPhone. This is the same class of processor used in the upcoming Palm Pre.

of all the upgrades coming to the new iPhone i really hope a higher resolution screen is one of them. 480x720 would be a nice upgrade from 320x480

Just like last year. Let the speculation and new threads of "NEW IPHONEZ" begin...

An LED or OLED screen would be great for battery life, but highly unlikely. Of all the rumors, a front facing camera for self-portrait photographs (and possible video conferencing) would be fantastic.

i agree an OLED screen would be nice, like the one used on the new Zune HD, but without a doubt apple will release a new iPhone this year

a nice glowing apple logo would look sweet too

I've been crawling along on EDGE with my 1st gen iPhone for almost 2 years now. Please let there be a new iPhone hardware announcement at WWDC, and please let that announcement include "SHIPPING NOW!"

Kind of surprises me that Apple runs out of these before the new rollout. . I understand they don't want to be stuck with a bunch of old phones, but one would think no sales for a few weeks is worse than discounting the old product--it's not like the last units aren't the most profitable anyway.

Ditto. The matte black, possible rubber grip on the rumored replacement looks ideal.

It would look really nice, and certainly would be flashy, but there would definetly need to be a setting to turn it off. I'm worried that it would drain battery life.

An OLED or LED will be viable though, because apple are always trying to find alternatives ways to reduce battery consumption. Plus OLED/LED screens are now affordable.

Although i don't think a front facing camera nor video conferencing will appear on this iPhone, maybe in the next couple of years?

Wouldn't mixing up the resolution wreak havoc on the whole iPhone/iPod touch unified platform?

And 2 years in, 320x480 is still better than the Zune "HD" which doesn't come out for months...

EDIT: not so much "better" as "equivalent" to the Zune "HD" since the Zune is a true 16:9 aspect ratio...

I don't think battery life will be a problem, they will most probably use the light from the screen instead of fitting an extra lighting source to power the logo. Like on the Macbook's they use the lighting from the screen.

Besy buy is always short of something ....adult staff, intelligent salesmen, etc. I'm sure 16 year old Johnny just forgot to place the order because he was too busy playing guitar hero.

This theory has been shot down in previous threads as the iPhone "guts" stand between the display and the logo, unlike the MacBook...

Though if Apple really wanted to do this, I'm sure they'd find a way.

i really dont care much for the zune HD, regardless of its resolution..
EDIT: i'm actually disappointed the zune HD is only at 480x272. i would have thought theyd do more than that.

what I would like is the iPhone to get an upgrade to compete with other phones, or do better than other phones.
like the htc touch HD,touchdiamond2,touchpro2 - all 800x480 res.

because apps are currently designed at 320x480 do you think the phone's screen resolution should stay like that for what? another year? 2 years? at one point theyll have to introduce higher res and let the phone upscale older apps.

also - OLED would be great, but you dont need to go there just for the higher res.

haha too true. What disappoints me most is the recent closings of "Circuit City" and "CompUSA", meaning that "BestBuy" is the only choice for consumers outside of major American cities.

It'd be interesting if the Apple logo would double as a flash for photographs

I was at Best Buy the other day, and the women working the checkout counter was trying to sell a guy the Extended Warranty for his Guitar Hero he was buying because, as she said, "the strings on the guitar have been known to break, it happened to her cousins." I laughed.

It seems every time I go to Best Buy and look at something, a sales person is always there to tell me a personal review of the item. They say "my friend has that camera, he loves it!" Or, "my friend has that iPhone case, he said it turns the phone black if you leave it on for too long." Everyone who works at best buy knows someone who owns every item there. Its just a total BS show every time you walk through the doors. Like when the guy there said "1GB of RAM probably won't be enough for Linux on that laptop." then 5 minutes later, as I was checking out without the RAM upgrade asked me "what's linux?"

Tools.

This is a monster of our own creation. We, the buying public, demand low pricing above all. Electronics retailers are thus staffed with low-paid teens who are there mostly to help you locate what you're trying to find, not help you make an informed buying decision. That's what the Internet is for.

Not to get off on a Best Buy hate fest, and boy are they stupid, I am really hoping that the new iPhone will include an OLED screen and with the zune HD announcement I really think it could happen simple to facilitate longer battery life.

but if you are going to new technology for the screen anyways...it would only make sense to go with OLED, since it is more efficient, gives more room inside the iphone for other components..and you can get really high resolution oleds these days.
