iPhone Restore Error 9807

I apologize for muddying the waters while troubleshooting requests when everyone is on the edge of their seats for the next generation of iphone rumors. I have a problem that I have searched far and wide to get an answer to, but I have not seen anyone with an identical problem.

So this is what happened: I had a jailbroken 2.2.1 iphone 3g that was starting to act a little funny (dropping calls in a strange way - even stranger than the usual AT&T dropped calls, and occasional lags at the strangest times), so I decided to do a restore. Initially I used a mac with 10.5.7 with the revision of iTunes before 8.2 and a jailbroken 2.2.1. The restore went fine, but when it rebooted to activate with itunes, I got an error -9807 with something to the effect that I couldn't connect with the itunes store due to this unknown error.

After I got this error, I tried deleting my keychains, tried doing it on the most recent revision imac and macbook pro. I tried downgrading my usb extensions to that of 10.5.5. I installed itunes 8.2 on my iMac and tried it on that. I even successfully installed an unjailbroken firmare of 2.2 and 2.2.1. However, each time after the software was installed and the phone was rebooting to re-activate through iTunes, I got the same error as before.

Has anyone seen this error before when they restored the software on their iphone? Has anyone seen a solution to the problem? Any help is much appreciated. By they way I have an appointment at the genius bar this evening if all else fails. Thanks in advance
 
Here is your solution

I'm assuming you have jailbroken your phone and, upon hearing the 3.0 firmware news, are trying to restore your phone. No big deal :)

Log in as another user (or create another user) and activate your phone in itunes. It might try to setup the phone using the name on the account you are using but, the fields are editable so you can change them. Once the phone is activated, switch back to your original account and everything should be kewl. You should now be able to sync contacts, music, etc.
 
Problem Solved

Thanks gar4ett for your reply, you were right. For anyone experiencing the same errors that stumbles on this thread, this is how I solved the problem:

When I restored my iphone software I kept getting the same 9807 error regardless of which computer I used to try to activate the phone. I then created a new system user account in preferences. When I connected the iphone to the computer while logged into the new account the activation in iTunes went through no problems (by the way I was having the same problem with both legit and jailbroken software). It didn't require me to enter any information like it would have if it were a brand new phone, the problem was just with the pinging of apple's servers to unlock the phone from its restored state. I was then able to sync all of my data back onto my phone, no problems.

What I discovered the cause to be was corrupt mobileme data that was syncing between all of my computers: macbook pro, imac, and pc running xp. I had a beast of a time trying to reset the corrupt data on mobile me without wiping the data on all of my computers. I can't believe that almost a year after registering for this service, I still have issues with the sync data becoming corrupt. In any case, the syncing of keychains I believe is what caused the problems, and creating a new user fixed the iphone problem and also kicked mobileme back into shape to allow me to register my computers again to my account and reset the data.

Found the problem, and it wasn't Apple (though they should be smarter about their handling of SSL and not use Verisign, but I digress...).

If you are getting the -9807 error message, it is because your copy of iTunes can not connect to the hosts evintl-ocsp.verisign.com or evsecure-ocsp.verisign.com (preventing access to verisign.com falls in to the best practices handbook for corporate security and filtering, but it is what's hamstringing the phone activation).

Suggested workaround: use a public WiFi, EVDO or other network that doesn't filter out or DNS black-hole Verisign.com.

Fixed for me

I was having this same error (which was irritating because it prevented me from using my phone post OS update).

I had turned my web proxy on in System Preferences>Network>Advanced>Proxies.

Turned off the web proxy and it connected fine.
 
I still can't get it working. I am going to lose my mind. Created a new account, that didn't do it. I tried the web proxy thingie but mine is already unchecked.

Anyone can help me with this? I can't even get to my main page anymore. I am stuck on the connect it to itunes.

VerisignHater was absolutely right. I was able to get things work by just logging in from a different account, but the reason why my iphone couldn't connect with the server to activate was because it couldn't connect to the evintl-ocsp.verisign.com servers. I had inadvertently blocked that communication using Little Snitch. I was having problems viewing certain banking websites, so I decided to look into and unblocked the connection. Everything is working perfectly now.
 
None of these methods worked for me when I used my mac, I had a gateway laptop running vista, plugged the iphone in and it worked fine.
I guess this could be a temporary solution should someone get desperate.
 
Iphone error -9807

This may be a bit helpful to some out there who are encountering this problem. I am running a Linux server in my home and my office, employing Dan's Guardian for internet safety. This blocks certain sites based on a lot of parameters. I finally ran across an answer on Apple's site that made me realize this was my problem with restoring the Iphone.

You may be familiar with this type of thing so here are the sites to place on the exception list and the article below.

During the update and restore process, iTunes needs to contact Apple. Ensure that your computer has the following ports open and can access these servers:
port 80
port 443
phobos.apple.com, albert.apple.com, gs.apple.com

If you experience "Error 9807", you must open access to the following VeriSign servers:

evintl-ocsp.verisign.com
evsecure-ocsp.verisign.com

Also ensure the content type isn't blocked

To add to mattcwarren's technical info, you also have to ensure the http content type is allowed, a lot of firewalls (especially corp) restrict content types

The one missing from watchguard firewalls is "application/ocsp-response"
 
Re-activate my iPhone

A great thanks to you indeed. I did what you said and I now have my iPhone back working again. Its just restoring all my things at the momen and I do now have my 4 update installed.

SO right

Yeah i just turned my proxies off...and it worked...so it would seem messing with the proxies works..
 
ok guys, if you are getting the error 9807
the time set on your computer is wrong.
Set it to automatic in the calender... or adjust it accordingly.

Took me about 23 minutes to figure out! Now it WORKS!

At first it sounded a little silly, sitting here 3:30AM i was angry so i decided to try it BAM! it worked lol thanks man you saved me a headache =P

Yep, time did it for me... The date was correct and I thought the time was, It said 7:19AM, opened up date and time, unchecked automatic, then rechecked it, the time went to 7:17AM and iTunes went right through...
 
iphone -9807 error - how to fix it

Very simple. Open Little Snitch software if you have it. There will be the General Tabs. In it, click Network Filter "STOP" button.
