iPod touch How to make iPod show badge on 'slide to unlock' screen

I have a first generation iPod touch running the latest firmware and I have my emails from gmail being pushed through to my iPod, but I don't know how to make my iPod display the little badge on the slide to unlock screen. Help please?
 
Badge? You can triple click the home button, and the music controls will appear on the lock screen. Is that what you meant?
