IBM and Sony to release 'Cell' CPU workstations this winter

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/05/12/sony_ibm_cell/

I wonder if Apple will catch this distributed computing train. Could there be an iGrid for normal people to go along with Xgrid for propeller heads?

Imagine, your FCP project is rendering too slow so you simply plug in your iPod and iCell to increase the CPU power of your system. Cool.

i don't think the number crunching power of an ipod would actually increase your performance in FCP. Large rendering jobs are usually done on render farms. the cell tech is dependent on a large number or user in a multi-user enviroment.

But before everyone starts getting too excited by all this, here's one other point to note: IBM has been here before. The Sony-IBM-Toshiba alliance is uncannily reminiscent of the Apple-IBM-Motorola alliance. One was formed to create an Intel-busting next-generation computing platform and the other launched the PowerPC.
