when i get my 3GS and activate, do i restore from a backup from my 1st gen phone, or is it a fresh sync? how does that work ?

As soon as you connect it will prompt you to select from either a fresh setup, or to restore from a backup. Do the restore from backup, then sync as normal, it will be pretty much exactly the same as your old iPhone. Just done it, worked fine.

if anyone is confused about this, here's what happens:

when you restore from your original phone's backup it restores your wallpaper, mail settings, etc.

you still have to sync to get your music and apps back.

the cool thing is that it remembers where all your icons were, so your new phone will look just like your old one when complete.

you may have to do some little things after you are done such as re-entering e-mail passwords.
