How to fix Imac Lag?

Im running Mac OS X
10.5.7

and every time i drag a pic to desktop or throw it in a trash it takes up to 5 seconds to do so,

its getting annoying

help asap

What model iMac?
That's definitely not right.

If you open Activity Monitor (Applications/Utilities) is anything hogging the CPU and/or heavily accessing the hard drive?

Try creating a new user account (System Prefs/Accounts) to temporarily test. It can be any kind of user, just create it, login and try to move files around. Do you experience the same problem? If not, you've isolated it to a software issue and something that's wrong with your user account.
 
Have you tried repairing disk permissions? This has happened to me before, and I just went to Disk Utility and repaired disk permissions. Afterwards, my mac became really fast.
 
I agree. Rrepairing disk permissions really gets the mac back in shape. Worked for me should work for you.

Repairing disk permissions is unlikely to fix an issue like this...

But- Go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility

Click your volume in the box on the left side of the window, and then click "Repair Disk Permissions" in the main portion of the window.


A lot of folks tend to rush to Repair Disk Permissions as a fix because it's easy, but it really has nothing to do with a situation that would cause items to transfer slowly IMHO.

Well, he's dragging it right into the Trash, not emptying the trash. Unless if he has a program that instantly deletes anything he puts in the trash, that shouldn't be a problem.

Exactly. I don't think that would fix it. However, I suppose it can't hurt to give it a try.


Like another poster said, it would be helpful to know what kind of iMac you have. Perhaps the HD is way outdated?
One more thing that might fix the issue is defragmenting the Hard drive. Mac OS X automatically defragments small files by itself, but it's nice to defragment your whole Hard drive once in a while.
Here's iDefrag, which is a utility that will defragment your hard drive for you.
 
dont repair permissions that way. boot onto the install DVD, go to the utility menu and run the same process in Disk Utility there.
 
Chances are this is a case of the hard drive being near full or getting old. HFS+ has troubles when the disk fills up, causes performance issues.
