Apple to Rate Your Karaoke Singing on Your iPhone?

Apple has published a very interesting patent application in which they explore how to provide a Karaoke experience on the iPhone. Not only would users be able to sing along with their favorite songs, but Apple wants to give real-time feedback to singers letting them know how they are doing.
Quote:
The systems and methods for providing users with real-time feedback while they are singing on key/pitch and providing real-time feedback to the user while the karaoke song is being sung. The feedback will be positive feedback if user is on key/pitch and it will be negative feedback if user is off key/pitch.
The patent application addresses "one of the biggest obstacles faced by amateur sings: singing on key/pitch". Apple suggests that this system could actually improve the quality of people's singing. One novel way to accomplish this would be to measure the pitch of the singer's voice and if it were to be too low, the device could exaggerate the low pitch of the user's own voice to encourage them to sing higher.

Apple clearly depicts pictures of the iPhone's iPod application with an additional menu option for "Karaoke". The interface for the Karaoke section is also shown above. We don't know if Apple will pursue this option in a future version of the iPhone software, but it's a fun and interesting proposition.

For the patent to work, Apple would have to prove that noone else has done this before. But it has.

I don't think so. They'd have to prove that no one else has done this particular implementation before. Considerably easier.

In terms of the iPod application on the iPhone... Instead of a Karaoke button, I'd much rather have a button to access the equalizer. Clicking the home button, then the settings icon, then iPod, then EQ, is a little much. I don't need to change it often, but it would help when listening to one music genre then switching to the next.

This would be absolutely hilarious to watch at a party! The greatest phone in the world now has potential to become a karaoke machine as well.... Too bad Billy Mays can't pitch this one lol

As interesting and fun the idea is, why is it a patentable one and more significaintly why is Apple patenting it. The state of the art that is needed for this already exists. There are quite a few great programs that can detect pitch. All that is needed is someone making an iPhone app for it. Or I am missing something here?

great, now the guy whos always dancing on the train, will be singing too!

But i love this idea. I hope to see it soon on the iPhone. the weird thing here is that theres not even 1 karaoke app in the app store. The american idol app sucks, it though u were going to be singing, but no, is just like Tap Tap but more expensive.

If you need a machine to tell you if you're singing on key, most likely you're not...

I see lots of frustrated hobby singers. It' s a bit like the superstar thing on TV.
Nevertheless I would buy it.

wow,
this is impressive

on march 12 i submitted iKaraoke to the app store,
http://www.ikaraokeapp.com,
at the time no karaoke app was on the app store

they just made fun of me just delaying and delaying until they rejected it on june 3 with their typical ridiculous justifications,
http://www.ikaraokeapp.com/node/18

never even bothered to reply any of my several emails sent to appreview since then

this week i just noticed a bunch of crappy karaoke apps,
and now this...

i dont get it, it is really not worth trying to innovate in this plattform...
wich is a shame, and actually what motivated more in developing for the iphone os

btw, i already developed the first midi controllers and first download app for iphone, iTouchMidi and iDownload, iKaraoke would be another pioneer...
