Watching downloaded movies

hi there,
i downloaded a movie and when i opened it it said i needed the components that went with quicktime in order to play it. what components does it mean?
 
Is there any way to get avi, mkv, etc. files to play smoothly? They look blocky on the mac to the point that it gives me a tension headache, but are a delight on my pc.

I am watching a 2.4gb .mkv file on my in quick time with perian installed and there has been no blockiness so far. On VLC occasionally I would get blockiness on the same video file and have noticed none so far on the same parts with Perian. Perian works great

vlc will prety much take anything u throw at it. altho sometimes it can be a little choppy.

Most definitely. The reason I use VLC is so I can do full screen on an extended desktop (My TV), which Quicktime won't support without "Pro." 🙄

I'd mirror, but it doesn't fill right, so I prefer the extended mode.
