Can i use redsn0w or do i have to restore

okay yesterday i jailbroke my iphone 3GS with purplera1n and my cydia is all screwed up and crashes after about a second. so i need to use redsn0w.

so my question is do i need to restore before i use redsn0w, or can i just use it now?

It would be safest to restore, then use redsn0w.
