iPod Sync problem with 3G Nano

Having a problem with a 3rd gen nano.

Each time we try to sync with iTunes, it says the iPod has to be restored. At that point, the iPod says it contains no music. So we let iTunes restore it and all works fine.

Then the next time we connect the iPod for sync, the same message pops up and we have to restore again. Any ideas on what our problem might be?

This is on a Mac, BTW.
