iPhone has been wiped and cannot re-install software

I tried updating my iphone to the lastest software version, but an error message appeared on my screen saying 'There was an invalid response received from the iphone'.

Now the iPhone has no software on it, and also when it is now connected to the PC nothing is picked up.

I need a way of installing the software onto the phone from scratch.

When I try turning it on, the apple icon appears on the screen and then the phone turns off again.

iTunes didn't pick anything up. The computer doesn't even make that beep when you connect a device.. I was thinking about maybe lending someone else's cable and see if it picks it up then

Restore the iPhone in DFU mode.

Sorry, I didn't look at the youtube from the previous poster. Anyway, that was my suggestion also. I'm not sure what else you can do other than going back to the store.

Are you on OS X 10.5.6? That has a bug that prevents DFU mode from working.

I'm on Windows XP Pro.
I've got a good idea it possibly could be the cable, because the computer doesn't pick any device up at all.

That is the only reason I can think of why DFU mode is not working.

You could try rebooting your computer also.

maybe try restoring it on a friends computer, just to get it up and running too. try a different usb jack. I know when I had a pc those things were very sketchy

Yeah it may be a good idea to try it on a different install.
Already tried different USB jack.

Just don't know anyone else that lives local I can i ask to try it out on their computer. I have a car charger for the iPhone, so i'll try that before I start doing anything major with my PC such as installing a new partition ect
