New to programming. Select all/ highlighting with a mouse

Hey guys. I am somewhat new to program. The current program that i am writing needs to be able to deal with any text that is highlighted/ selected. I am absolutely clueless as to how to do that or even what highlight/select really even is. Can anyone give me some pointers in the right direction pleas?

You should probably first state what language and environment you're programming in. Are you using Cocoa/Objective-C/Xcode? Java? Python? Targeting Mac OS or iPhone? etc.

well I don't know what widget toolkit you are using, but you might want to start by looking at its API for methods to get what you ask for.

Are you using the Python-Cocoa bridge (in other words using Cocoa UI elements) or just straight Python? And if the latter, what GUI toolkit are you using? Python does not have a native/built-in GUI.
