Assuming an average size MP3 file, that is encoded at around 160Kbps, and about 3.5 minutes long, the size will be around 4Mb. while this can't be true to 100% of your music, it's probably a fairly good average to consider, and at that rate, you can place about 8,000 songs on the 32Gb iPod.

That really matters on a number of factors, such as:
How long the songs are The encoding of the song The quality of the song On average, it holds about 7,000 songs. |

It really depends on the encoding and the size of the songs. All my music is 256kbps AAC, and I can put 5500 songs on it roughly.

This is pretty accurate. I have a 16 GB iPhone, 11.4 gigs of which are songs. About 80% of my music is 320 kbps, AAC and MPEG. I don't know the average length of my songs though. I have roughly 1500 songs. Triple this number = 4500 songs. So, for mp3s encoded in the best possible quality, about 4500-5500 songs on a 32 GB, depending also what other data/apps you have on your phone.

It's hard to tell since it depends on multiple factors, like someone above said.
But I have 2,747 songs on my iPhone and they take up 14.13GB.

The actual capacity is 29.33gb in the same measurement as your iTunes music. (the 32gb they call it on the box and the back of the iPhone is 32 billion bytes)
So, about 267 hours worth of music from iTunes plus (256kbit AAC). Assuming all songs are 4 minutes long (many are shorter), that's about 4,000 songs, worst case scenario. Unless you load it up with lossless compressed files, which can vary in size by quite a bit.

People really still want to know numbers of songs? Geez.
Most 128k-encoded songs take about 1MB per minute. Most 256k-encoded songs take about 2MB per minute. If you're asking such a question, you most likely have every single song in one of those bitrates. So as far as time, the ~28GB iPhone will hold about 28,000 minutes of 128k songs or 14,000 minutes of 256k songs. If you want to use a four-minute song average, I think that's 7,000 or 3,500 songs. My math may suck on that part.

i'm pretty sure if you have a collection over 32GB, then you can pick and choose some music you will never listen to. and you could always make a smart 'shuffle' playlist that will pick songs not synced to your iPhone so you will always have something fresh if you SOMEHOW get bored.
but keeping in mind you will have around 250MB in the ipsw and no more than 2GB EVER in apps that still leaves you with 30GB to fill. trust me, you will be more than fine - and this is coming from someone with an 80GB music collection with an 8GB iPhone |

How many do you want it to hold? If you have <32GB of music, then you're good.

most of my songs are 256kbps, and most are about 8MB, so calculate that against available formated free space (29.3GB)=3362.5 songs. Of course thats all music, and no videos, or pictures, or apps
Hows that for a number. I buy all my music from iTunes, or Amazon, so there all MPEG-4 with ACC codec. |

Yup. And it would've confused 80% of the people if I said <29.3GB.

And that's only about 42% of the people that would say "hey, I bought a 1.5 TB hard drive!!!11!1 why is Windows saying it's only 1.36 TB?!?!?!!11!1"

If you look on the Apple website, it states the following capacities for the iPod Touch (same as the iPhone);
8GB, 16GB, or 32GB flash drive. Holds up to 1,750, 3,500, or 7,000 songs in 128-Kbps AAC format (based on 4min per song) |
