Can I have a "events" type app on the home screen (2g)

On my Blackberry i could have any events coming up on the home screen
all i can see on the 2g is i have to access the calender to see if anything is "happening"

what i would love is to see any events for the day on the home screen!

Ive seen "remindyou" on Cydia
is this any good or is there anything else for free`/
 
I moved this to hacks because, as you observe (regarding Cydia), all the ways to do this are jailbreak-based.
