My external Time machine disk has not been working for the past few weeks. The drive is connected but will not mount to my 24" iMac (via USB). When I open disk utility nothing shows up.

When I connect the drive to my 12" Powerbook it does not connect but I did notice in Disk Utility that it appears for a few seconds about every 5-10 seconds. When it appears the two "named formatted sectors" show up so I know the drive is not 100% toast. It does not stay connected long enough to verify the disk. I also noticed that the drive actually sounds like it is shutting down and spinning back up every 10 seconds or so.

After this I decided that maybe the drive is OK but not the enclosure, so I bought a Macally SATA drive enclosure. Well, the same thing is happening so now I am not so confident the drive is 100%.

Is there anything that can be done to recover this drive? It is only 2 years old and has not had the full life I expected it to have!
