Do I need to schedule an appointment at the Apple store to pick up my laptop ?

You don't need an appointment, but I would call first to make sure it's ready.

I thought they usually called the person. They called me when mine was done.

they aren't the greatest at calling... i had mine repaired at the chicago store on michigan avenue for a failed nvidia 8600m gt and got tired of waiting and finally called the store to find out it had been done for 2 days

key to calling retail store is to press the #5 when the automated voice comes on with options and it will get you right through to a live person at the store and prevent you from getting transferred off to applecare

Yes, but occasionally they have to leave messages.
