missing Russian characters

How do I get Russian characters back into the library browser?
My hard drive crashed recently, so I had to replace it, and reinstall iTunes, with the latest version. I copied the songs from my iPod back into iTunes -- they are now stored primarily on a UBS hard disk.
Some of the songs are off Russian CDs. The titles etc still show up on the iPod in Russian, but in the iTunes library they just show up as a series of question marks.
Is that something I need to fix on the Mac or in iTunes?
