Windows Media Player for .avi, .mpg, etc.?

Quicktime will only play about half of the movie files I transferred over from my PC. Which app should I download to watch .avi files and others? Is Windows Media Player the best to get?

most of those .avi files are probably DivX files. you COULD go here.... www.divx.com and download the codec to play on quicktime, OR you can download Mplayer or VLC. I recommend VLC because it plays ALMOST all movie/sound files. Go here to take a look... http://www.videolan.org/

Oh, and if youre trying to play WMV3 files, only micro**** Windows Media Player 9 will play those. If the movie is .avi and is compressed with WMV3.... well you're SOL, VLC cant read WMV3, and the WMP cant even view .avi files.

howdy,

i have another suggestion for video file playback (.mpg,.dvx.,.avi). this prog usually plays everything quicktime can't.

it's pretty simple to use and originally for linux, but they have tweaked it for mac os x as well. i've opened many a file, and have been satisifed with its performance.

go to google and search for mplayerosx. hope that helps.

Have you ever used VLC? I used to be a big M Player fan, but I find VLC to be even better--less bugs, supports more formats, and runs faster on slower computers (according to my friend with an old iMac).
 
To answer the origional posters question get allof them. I have mplayer, VLC, windows media player, and the divx thingy. It is nice to know I can play any media files.

Yeah, if you use dual monitors for playing back video, I've found VLC doesn't like the second monitor too much. Stutteridly video

WMP9 reads most of the major formats: .avi, mpeg, .asf, .asx, etc...where did you get the idea that it can't read .avi? It's like saying QT can't view mp4's.
 
bah... Micro$oft

Unfortunately I have two micro$oft programs on my Powerbook. One being that Windoze Media player and the M$N Me$$enger program. The only reason for this is for connectivity issues 🙁

Convert all those video formats to Quicktime

You can use Microsoft Movie maker that comes free with Windows XP. And then import the movie using that program and export the movie to a firewire DV videocamera. Then plug in that camera to your Mac into iMovie and then you can export those videos to Quicktime.

Oh, you might even be able to plug the firewire cable directly to your Mac instead of the camera but I haven't tried that yet.
