No, sorry, OS X won't help you, nor will any other OS in particular, since the traffic's going over the school network. If you're sending from a source you can control to a system within the school, you can encrypt the files. You can also use SSH/SSL/HTTPS - but only if the sites you're going to use those protocols.

Most porn, er, weather sites don't hide their content, particularly pictures. And pirated music, er, pirated video, er, recorded messages from your grandmother probably aren't going to be invisible either. No matter how you hide the content, note that the size and ports of the transfers can also give you away.

Assume they can see anything that isn't encrypted. Assume they can guess at most other things based on file size and port info. Assume also that odds are they don't give a rat's butt unless their bandwidth is getting hogged excessively.

You can use a proxy, a host that you connect to that in turn connects to the internet, piping it all to you discreetly. However this is only really effective at avoiding DNS blocks and filters. If they want to know what you're doing, they will; they can use a variety of methods to monitor this...

My suggestion would be to familiarize yourself well with the rules so you know what you can and can't technically view... connect to other sites through your mobile phone, perhaps, or off-site...

Spoof the Dean/principal's IP & MAC address when you do the downloading.

Of course this could get you into some hot water if they catch you.

 Any good way to ensure this with OSX?

To learn how to do this, get a book about hacking (even non-hackers/wannabies know where to get these), sit on the couch in front of the fire, with a coup of green tea; and read for a long time. If your planning to become a hacker there are several rules you must know.

1) A (wannibie) hacker, never asks any other person for help. Ever.
2) A hacker learns their skills not from one person (friend, fellow hacker) but from many sources. And he does it by himself (herself).
3) A hacker is not an idiot.
4) A hacker never asks such obvious questions.
5) You don't become a hacker so you can D/L porn at your school.

Thoes are just some of them, but the most important thing about a hacker is that they learn by mistake. You posting this thread is a (big) mistake.

And OS X isn't ideal for hacking. Thats why I use it as my primary OS. :D

Paul, would you sugest a proxy like megaproxy?

EDIT: I'll be surprized if this post doesn't get deleted

No one said it isn't possible. We just said that, if what you're doing is illegal, and particularly if it's illegal and bandwidth-consuming and subject to being sued by the RIAA, then the school can find out what you're doing. They likely won't for many individual cases. But they can. And, depending on what you download, they can nail you big time.

It's like underage drinking and smoking pot. Odds are you won't get caught. If you do get caught, there's a wide range of things - from nothing to jail - that could happen. People drink and smoke pot anyway. You can download music if you want. Just don't be stupid about it. Know the risks. Decide if its worth it to you. Be smart. That's all.

Besides, don't forget that iTMS will let you download one free song each and every week. Legally. ;)

iTunes will let you download 2 free songs a week. The second song is the free discovery song; just go to each different genre, and look at the top of the window; there are normally three ads, but if you find the discovery download, the middle ad will have something like 'free discovery download.'

And besides, for most people, 1 or 2 songs a week isn't enough. And you can't choose your own songs either. :(

Then that's when you plunk down 99¢.

Hmmm. $0.99 for a song? Legally? Not a bad deal, I gotta get in on this 99 cent thing...Oh, whait 4420 songs X .99 = $4375.80

Hmmm. 15 year old kid + no job + $4375.80 worth of music = sketchey

Note: I don't actually have that many songs. ;)

So being young and poor entitles you to steal? Remind me to lock my doors. It's not the price of music that's sketchy, it's your attitude.

Just do without until you can afford it.

Having no money doesn't entitle me (or anyone) to steal, if I had the money, I would guarntee to you that I would deffinatly use iTMS. When I get the money to do that, I will purchase it legally, but untill then, I'm left with one option to get my music: p2p

I know - I was just being sarcastic. Those free songs are a nice way to listen to groups you wouldn't listen to otherwise, but no one's going to build up a big collection at the massive rate of 104 songs per year.

Damn, Sam... how on Earth did kids ever manage to live before the age of digital music theft?

Deprived as I was, I seem to recall having enough music to get by on.

Of course, back in the day, you didn't need 5000 songs to feel that you had a selection.

Now, if you're poor, all you've got is, I guess, the vast set of songs available for free streaming on internet radio. Wow. That must suck. And free downloads. And ripping your CDs. Crap. Might as well be deaf.

One possible trick would be Virtual PC, if its network options are set correctly it can appear as a unique system on a network (a dhcp server would assign it it's own IP address) hide the virtual pc app somewhere secret on the mac, in a hidden folder maybe.
if anyone spots high bandwidth usage they'll probably spot a windows system is responsible and ignore your mac and you can quickly force quit virtual pc if needed.
this would only be practical if the mac is your own - a laptop you can install what you like on, if its a school system it would be hard to get virtual pc onto.

This probly wouldn't work but that depends on how clever the network admin is.

Bye

That's a damn good question, just one more reason I'm glad I was born right before Napster. :D

That is why God invented p2p.

:D ;)

The simplest solution to get around any usage rules for a school network is to use a different network. Public internet access areas can be useful, or even a dialup connection if you have plenty of patience. Just make sure your p2p software is completely inactive when connected to the school network.

Weak. You realize that not stealing and not having anything is an option too, right?
