The article give a cursory nod to free iPhone apps, but there's no mention of Apple's phenomenal success with the App Store. Yeah, a lot of the apps are free, but a lot of them aren't. And many developers seem to be selling a lot of them. The store will soon have over 100,000 apps available, so I wouldn't exactly consider that a death knell for game makers.

Perhaps the "old style" of gaming is waning. And perhaps the folks at Apple are once again ahead of the curve and know where the gamers are heading.
