headless emac/imac?

any instructions on such a task could be accomplished? i used to have the original imac and was unsuccessful at dissconnecting the monitor without the whole machine not being able to turn on.
 
I doubt it's possible. It must be connected to some important hardware or something.

I think it's possible. Search this forum and Google it. I know I've read it somewhere.
