I've seen this terminology used several times on this site. I'm not exactly sure what a slashdot troller is... can anyone explain to me what slashdot is and why anything associated with it is negative?

Who knows. Slashdot's apparently some huge tech news site that everybody go gaga over. I for one have only visited the place once to see what the fuss was all about. Terrible layout. I read if your site go slash dotted, then say bye bye to your site's bandwidth 'cause all the slashdot trollers will rush in and kill it.
A slashdot troller is a person who visits a site due to a link on slashdot.org. /. is basically the largest geek news site around and a link on the front page can eat up a year's worth of bandwidth in less than 10 minutes. They have some useful stories sometimes, but the users can be very rude once in a while.

Slashdot is slashdot.org. It's sort of a news site but it limits itself to electronic/geek matters. I check in on /. a good half dozen times a day. I'm not sure why anything related to /. would be a bad thing--unless you're a Windows lover.
A troll is somebody who visits a message board and posts unpopular statements in order to stir everybody up. We get them here sometimes but not too often all things considered. Our moderators do a pretty good job. An example of a troll on MacRumors might be something like: "Why do you guys love your damn MACS so much. They're just overpriced underspeced pieces of crap. Oh how pretty. Pretty don't get get good frame rates in games. You all suck and are pathetic losers." That's a little more obvious than most, but you get the idea.
So I assume that a Slashdot troll is somebody who comes over via a link on Slashdot (as mentioned by another poster a /. link is a very powerful thing and will bring most people's servers to a grinding halt in a matter of minutes) and proceeds to sling some crap.

The thing about slashdot trolls coming up often now is because of the GNAA.
Macrumors editors have been fooled by them. If you look at comments at slashdot and look at all the -1 things that you can't see by default you will understand what the deal is.

Ipodlounge took apart an iPod Mini, Slashdot put a link to there and....
....BOOM!!! all that bandwidth down the crapper.
IMHO, the site is totally ruined now, too many jerks and butt-heads who like to start fights.

Fark Trolls
Yeah, I hear what you mean by Slashdot being ruined by trolls.
We're getting that sort of lot at Fark. It's sad because the posts' threads are becoming more-and-more routine... i.e. Politics: One person, right off the bat, says something totally polarised and stupid. Then another person from the opposite extreme makes some sort of uninformed comment, and it all goes downhill from there. Usually it turns out Moore v. [anything right], Kerry v. Bush ("A great leader divides" or something like that).
To make the long story short (too late), trolls are starting to ruin all the good sites like Fark, "/.", etc
