No Service on iPhone 3G after unlock

Hello, I just bought an iPhone on ebay and it came in the mail today. I have t-mobile, so I followed directions to unlock and jailbreak it. I used redsn0w to jailbreak and purplesn0w to unlock since ultrasn0w kept saying "No repository found" in cydia. But when I put in my T-Mobile sim, it says no service on the top and I can't make any calls 🙁, any help is much appreciated.
 
can't you just use redsn0w to unlock and jailbreak it?

unless redsnow doesn't work with 3G or 3GS
