Can you use Apple Remote Desktop to Control/Observe a mac not on the same network?

Sorry for the long title, but I'm looking to control my desktop work computer with my laptop work computer. I have ARD installed and am able to control the desktop with the laptop while at work, but I want to be able to do this at home. Is it possible? Any other solutions if not?
