Crumpler Bags

I just got my PB 15 and am looking for a good bag. I will also be carrying a camera (digi-SLR) and school books in it.
does anyone have experience with the Crumpler bags? Specifically the "formal lounge" or the "sheep scarer"? How about the messenger bags, are they better than a backpack?
Are the bags heavy? Do they protect the notebook well enought?

PS I'm pretty small, (5'2") so i want a bag that's not going to hang to my knees 😉 and won't be extremely heavy.

Crumpler bags are awesome imho, i have mcbains baby and a base toucher backpack. The base toucher can fit the 12 inch PB, power supply etc, books, and some clothes. I think the sheep scarer may be a little small, but i hear what ure saying about the height issue.

The build quality on these bags really is excellent.

I got the McBains Lovechild for my 12" iBook and I liked it a lot. I say liked because it tore open and my iBook fell out. 😱 Not really. 🙂 I gave it away because I wanted more space to carry other things. I have the... Wee Bee coming to me as we speak! If you do buy one first check out Froogle (of course), also eBay, and don't buy from Crumpler-usa.com or something like that. Crumplerbags.com is cheaper and it's the same site (pretty much). Not really sure what the difference is but I've bought my previous one and this one from Crumplerbags.com and not had any problems.

Plus they're fashionable... 🙂

Hey Klopsi - I used to swear by my McBain's Baby when I had 12 inchers, it was the best laptop sleeve around by far and very cheap - excellent for throwing into another Crumpler messenger bag (I used a Wonder Weenie) or the back pocket of a backpack. I think the new McBain's Lovechild is a bit too much of a hybrid sleeve/bag (meaning you can carryt it around on its own, but its a bit larger) for my liking, and wish they'd kept something similar to the McBain's Baby. The new School Hymn feels a little too plastic folderish for my liking.

Now that I've gone 15" I had to put the McBain's Baby aside and just bought a relatively cheap older design STM sleeve (not the Neoprene ones, which while nice, didn't seem to me to offer enough impact protection), which almost does the job the Crumpler did. But doesn't quite have the same style 😉
 
i have the school hymn and it's great because it protects really well and i can just put it inside any other bag or backpack as the need arises.
 
The Wee Bee is an awesome bag. If you see someone with an orange one walking around then it's a very good chance that it's me!

Is the orange really orange? i've heard people say it's more brown colored.

I have the silver school hymn for my 17 and it works really well keeping scratches and dust out of my machine. The hymn impresses everyone when I slip it out of my STM loop backback. I use it as a base when using it outside, keeping the pb inisde whilst open on the traing or sit it on top when out in RL. Non-mac users keep thinking its a special Apple made cover. I am really happy with it.
 
How sturdy are the School Hymns? I was looking at the Farmer's Double camera/laptop bag, but I had read that since there isn't a hard plate to protect the laptop, the screen can break if you bend over. Are they worth $50 additional cost?

How sturdy. Well its not super solid, those walls flex some. They are good for a bit of rough house but I would'nt rely on it to help too much in a fall or if someone sat on it. I am sure if I put my pb in it and tried to beak the screen I could. metal or other super tough stuff.

But for abrasions, dust, dirt, sharp objects, minor tumbles, minor liquid spills etc they seem to fit the bill. Handling my pb in and out of the backpack and around the house and work is so much easier with this cover. Its less slippery, allows me to open the machine on almost any surface and keeps the heat from my legs when working in a chair at conferences.

I didn't see anything tougher.
 
What about timbuk2 bag for a 12 in powerbook? The one apple sells on it website? Any good? Plus hold some textbooks like 2/3

So, taking that into consideration, would my PowerBook be safe enought in a Farmer's Double (Crumpler) for 3 weeks in buses, planes, trains, boats, etc? I'm a very careful person, but I don't want my baby to get broken.

Well the only crumpler I have used is the school hymn, so thats all I can recommend. I think it adds signifcantly to the protection of any powerbook that then is carried in a larger bag or back pack. I use an STM large loop back pack because my 17 is heavy after a while and I want a good padded ride. Sorry.
 
the Crumpler is orange. Not bright orange, more earthly toned... so I guess there's some brown in there... but it's not mute. The online pictures are pretty accurate in my opinion. Good luck!
 
Crumpler and Timbuk2

I have the crippy duck (big brother of wee bee), also in orange/brown, and It's great, although a bit bulky. It's definitely unique and does a great job protecting the laptop. I also have the timbuk2 commute, although I use it less for my laptop and more for school books. I definitely think the Crumpler bags are tremendously sturdy as well as aesthetically interesting.

BTW, the crippy duck 'perfectly' fits the 15" powerbook.
